The First Pitch: Things to Know
With Spring Break about to begin at the University of Utah, the Utes head out to the Bay Area for a three-game series at San Jose State. It'll run from March 7-9 at Excite Ballpark as the Utes kick off a stretch of seven games in 10 days.
- Utah is 10-2 on the season after taking three of four games last weekend against California Baptist and UC Riverside. The Utes played two games against each foe, outscoring opponents 39-25.
- The Utes' offense last weekend was consistent with the first month of the season—as a club, Utah is hitting .325 which ranks second in the Big 12 and No. 27 in the country. It has been keyed by 41 doubles; only Georgia Tech (44) has more in college baseball.
- The team hit .356 over the four games with 16 doubles and 73 total bases. A key contributor was shortstop Core Jackson (.611 on the weekend) who was named Brooks Wallace Player of the Week as the nation's top shortstop.
- Jackson had three doubles as part of a 4-for-5 line in the Feb. 28 win at California Baptist. He had five RBI while Jackson's three doubles tied the most in a game this season by a Big 12 player. He also reached base in five of six plate appearances during the weekend finale at UC Riverside, contributing four of Utah's 21 hits. The team hit total tied the most by a Big 12 team this season.
- Defensively, he was error-free on 26 chances (13 assists, 13 putouts) and had a hand in five double plays.
- On the mound, the pitching staff has an ERA of 3.82 through eight games. Utah ranks sixth in the Big 12 and in the top-60 across college baseball.
- Right-handed pitcher Colter McAnelly earned Big 12 Pitcher of the Week in each of the first two weeks of the season, including as co-pitcher in Week 1. When he was the solo winner on Feb. 24, McAnelly was coming off a seven-inning start and win at San Diego State, striking out 10 batters. The leadoff batter for SDSU never reached against McAnelly and he made it to the seventh inning before walking anyone or allowing a baserunner to reach third base.
- Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah's fifth affiliation since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-98), Mountain West (1999-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since joining the WAC, Utah has won five conference championships, most recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
- The Utes finished 2024 with 33 wins, tying the second-most in program history. Despite being picked 10th in the Pac-12 Preseason poll, Henderson's club entered the D1Baseball.com top 25 in late April and was two games out of first place entering the penultimate Pac-12 series.
- After the series with the Spartans, Utah will remain in the Bay Area for a Tuesday night tilt against former Pac-12 conference-mate California.
