SALT LAKE CITY –
Austen Roellig went 3-for-4 and
Core Jackson homered for the fourth straight game, but Arizona State scored three runs in the ninth inning to take the series opener from Utah 9-5 on Friday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Jackson now leads the team with six home runs, while he also had an RBI double in the game. He has now hit safely in seven straight games and reached base in 19 straight contests.
ASU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings, but Utah (13-11, 2-5 Big 12) pulled even with a three-spot in its half of the third.
Derek Smith had a leadoff single on the first pitch of the frame, then
Matt Flaharty drove him in with a triple to right field. Flaharty had been down in the count 1-2 but fought back to bring it full and eventually win the seven-pitch battle.
Jackson followed with his double as Flaharty came 90 feet home, before a single from Roellig brought in Jackson with the tying run.
The clubs traded runs over the middle innings before the Sun Devils took a 6-4 lead in the eighth inning. Jackson hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Utes spark and cut the deficit to 6-5. Looking to keep the momentum going,
Tyler Quinn worked a five-pitch walk and Roellig singled to put two on with nobody out.
Kaden Carpenter dropped down a bunt, but ASU opted for the force out at third base to eliminate the lead runner.
Drake Digiorno then popped a one-out single through the right side to load the bases. But a double play would end the threat for Utah as the game turned to the ninth inning with a 6-5 score.
The Sun Devils strung together four hits in the ninth inning and plated three runs to secure the series-opening victory.
Demitri Diamant (0-2) tossed two innings of relief in the loss. Starter
Colter McAnelly received a no-decision with a six-inning outing, striking out six batters.
