The First Pitch: Things to Know
At long last, the Utah baseball team begins its 2025 home schedule on Friday, beginning a three-game series at Smith's Ballpark against Big 12 preseason favorite Oklahoma State.
- The Utes had been scheduled to play at home this past Tuesday and Wednesday against Northern Colorado, but both games were canceled due to inclement weather.
- A note for fans coming out to Smith's Ballpark this season: Utah has moved to the first base dugout. Visiting teams will now use the third base dugout in a change from past years.
- Utah is 11-8 overall and is looking to break out of a five-game slide. The team was last in action with a three-game series at Kansas State from March 14-16, including a seven-inning start from right-hander Colter McAnelly in the series opener. McAnelly left in line for the win, but K-State rallied for a walk-off victory before taking both the Saturday and Sunday contests.
- Utah and Oklahoma State have met just once on the baseball diamond in recorded history; it was in 2015 during the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge in Arizona. The ninth-ranked Cowboys came away with the victory that day by a 10-2 score.
- Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah's fifth affiliation since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-99), Mountain West (2000-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since joining the WAC, Utah has won five conference championships, most recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
- The Utes have played all three current Division I programs in the State of Oklahoma (Oklahoma State, OU and Oral Roberts). Oral Roberts is the only team of the three that has played the Utes in Salt Lake City before; it was back in 1981 when the sides split a doubleheader.
- In the series at Kansas State last weekend, infielder Tyler Quinn was 6-for-12 including a double, two RBIs and four runs scored. Shortstop Core Jackson and right fielder Kaden Carpenter each went 4-for-11, with the latter belting a double, homer and three RBIs on the weekend.
- Headlining the offense has been Jackson, the two-hole hitter who has hit safely in 13 of Utah's last 14 games. The native of Wyoming, Ontario, boasts a team-best .421 batting average (fifth in the Big 12) while also owning Utah's top slugging percentage (.605), most runs scored (19), total bases (46) and steals (7).
- The Utah bats have combined for 47 doubles on the season, checking in at third-best in the Big 12. Carpenter leads the team with eight, while Quinn and Matt Flaharty each have slapped seven two-baggers of their own.
- Flaharty has started all 19 games at second base, bumping his batting average by nearly 80 points from a season ago (.282 to .359). He has held down the leadoff spot in the batting order for much of the season to date, stringing together a .359 average with 12 walks and 12 RBI.
- Defensively, Gary Henderson's club has been in the upper tier of the Big 12 with a .978 fielding percentage; it enters the weekend ranked fourth in the league and No. 38 nationally.
- The Utes won't be going far over the next week and a half. After hosting the Cowboys this weekend, Utah hits the road for an in-state battle at Utah Tech (March 25) then hosts Arizona State (March 28-30) for another Big 12 Conference series.
This Week in Utah Baseball History
March 16, 2012 – Utah clinches its first ever Power Conference series win, sweeping a Pac-12 doubleheader on the road from No. 21-ranked USC—allowing just one run in 18 total innings. Joe Pond struck out seven Trojans during his six-inning start in the opener before eventual Milwaukee Brewers draftee Tyler Wagner picked up the win with three innings of no-hit ball. The defense turned three double plays in the second game.
March 17, 2024 – Trailing 9-0 to No. 3 Oregon State after three innings and going nine up nine down, the Utah bats heated up for 14 runs and 16 hits over the final six innings to pull out a 14-11 victory at Smith's Ballpark.
Kaden Carpenter's RBI single scored the tying run in the seventh, before
Matt Flaharty's three-run double gave the team a 13-10 lead later in the inning. It remains the largest comeback win for Utah since at least 2002.
Randon Hostert tossed three innings of relief to receive the win while closer
Micah Ashman earned the save.
