MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Utah baseball team struck first but Kansas State responded with 12 unanswered runs to eventually take the middle game of the three-game set 13-2 on Saturday at Tointon Family Stadium.
Austen Roellig (2-for-5) extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, while
Core Jackson (3-for-5) recorded his team-leading 11
th multi-hit performance in the loss.
Utah (11-7, 0-2 Big 12) once again scored in the first inning to get an early 1-0 lead. Jackson slapped a one-out single and took second after a bobble in the outfield.
Tyler Quinn (2-for-5) followed up with a base-hit the other way to score Jackson from second base.
The Wildcats would counter with a four-spot in their half of the second inning, posting four hits and batting around to take a 4-1 lead. K-State followed with a seven-spot in the third inning to put the game out of reach, and one run apiece in the fourth and seventh innings.
Utah got one more run in the fifth on another Quinn base hit, this time scoring
Matt Flaharty. But a fielder's choice ended the inning soon after and the Utes were unable to crack into the run column any further.
Merit Jones (2-1) took the loss.
Demitri Diamant came on from the bullpen during the third inning and put on a 3.2-inning relief appearance with three strikeouts.
Sam Stockman and
Brady Joyner also pitched out of the bullpen.

The teams will play the finale of the three-game series on Sunday at Tointon Family Stadium, with first pitch at noon MT on ESPN+.
