Utah Upsets No. 24 Arizona State in 4-3 Thriller

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team upset No. 24 Arizona State in a 4-3 thriller on Sunday.Â
Utah is now 5-1 overall on the season and start Big 12 play at 1-0.Â
DOUBLES
Utah started the match off strong by capturing the doubles point. The Sun Devils started doubles off by capturing a win at the No. 2 spot. Ute duo Reid Jarvis and Dante Teramo downed ASU's No. 55 ranked Bor Artnak and Matic Dimic 6-3 in the No. 1 spot.Â
The doubles point advantage came down to the No. 3 court where Utah's Berk Bugarikj and Nicolas Calixto went into extra sets but ultimately defeated ASU's Mikey Anderson and Nicola Cigna 7-5. Utah's two doubles victories gave them the point advantage going into singles play.Â

SINGLESÂ
Arizona State started singles off with wins on the No. 1 court and No. 2 courts. Utah was able to get a win at the No. 4 court where Dante Teramo defeated Tanner Povey 2-6, 7-5, 6-1. Teramo's win tied the match at 2-2. The Sun Devils then picked up a win on the No. 3 court to take a 3-2 lead.Â
Reid Jarvis came up big for the Utes with a 6-3, 6-7(0), 6-2 win over Daniel Phillips on court No. 5. With the overall match tied at 3-3 the clinch came down to Utah's Nicolas Calixto and ASU's Roi Ginat on the No. 6 court. Calixto picked up a 7-6(5) win in the first set and fell 2-6 in the second set. Calixto then pulled out an intense 6-4 win in the third set to claim the win for Utah.Â
UP NEXT
The Utes will head to Los Angeles to take on Cal Poly on Feb. 18 before taking on LMU Feb. 19. After that the Utes will head to the Battle in Boro hosted by Middle Tennessee before returning to Salt Lake City to host Denver on March 2.Â
