SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team fell to the Oklahoma State Cowboys 4-3 this Saturday evening to close out nonconference play.
DOUBLES
Oklahoma State started strong by capturing the doubles point. The Cowboys claimed a win at the No. 1 spot where Utah's AJ Deem and
Charles Frey battled against OSU's Alessio Basile and Haydar Gokpinar but ultimately fell 6-4.
On the No. 2 court, Simeon Terziev and
Emmett Potter faced OSU's Derek Pham and Charlie Valentine. The Utes battled and forced the set into extra games but ultimately fell 7-5 to give Oklahoma State the doubles point advantage.
At the No. 1 spot, Balthazar Huss and
Dante Teramo's match against the Cowboy's Nicolas Kobelt and Aaron Williams was left unfinished in a tiebreak at 6-6, (4-4).
SINGLES
In singles play, Utah's Lorenzo Esquici started things off by defeating OSU's Ian Bracks 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot.
Utah's Balthazar Huss continued the momentum by downing OSU's Aaron Williams 6-1, 7-6(3) at the No. 5 spot. The Utes now had a 2-1 advantage over the Cowboys.
At the No. 6 spot, AJ Deem took his match against Cowboy's Haydar Gokpinar to three sets but fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The overall match was tied back up at 2-2 when the Cowboys found an edge at the No. 1 spot.
Dante Teramo battled in a tight match but fell 7-6 (5), 7-5 against OSU's Alessio Basile.
The Utes were able to tie things up on the No. 2 court where Emmett Potter defeated Nicolas Kobelt 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to make the overall match tied at 3-3.
The match came down to the No. 3 court where Simeon Terziev and Derek Pham battled into three sets. Terziev claimed the first set 6-3 but Pham claimed the second set 6-4. The two battled in the third set tying things up at 6-6 to force the set into a tiebreak. Despite a back-and-forth tiebreak, the Cowboys were able to sneak just ahead with an 8-6 score and clinch the match for Oklahoma State.
The Utes are now 4-10 on the season.
UP NEXT
Utah will continue Big 12 play by taking on Arizona on Saturday, March 14. The Utes will then travel to the Sunshine State to face the UCF Knights (March 21).
