SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah lacrosse program had six different Utes post a goal, with two Utes marking three scores, before falling to Delaware, 13-12, at their home opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Utes fought hard and started the game strong, putting out the first attempt in the first minute of the game. This also marks the second game this season that the Utes were the first point on the board. After the first goal by
Jonas Hunter,
Cade Faulkner would quickly follow up with one of his own, putting the Utes up 2-0.
Utah and Delaware bounced back and forth between a Utah lead and a tie, before the Blue Hens would take the lead for the first time in the middle of the third quarter. For every point Delaware would add, the Utes would follow behind and close the gap, until the end of the fourth quarter would seal the 13-12 loss.
GAME LEADERS
Utah had six different players contribute goals and two different players mark an assist. Sophomore
Cade Faulkner and senior
Jonas Hunter led the team in goals, Faulkner earned his first career hat trick and Hunter reaching a season-high. Junior
Ryan Stines led the team in assists, putting up five helpers, tying
Tyler Bradbury and Josh Stout for third-highest individual single-game assists. Stines also led the team in points, after scoring two goals in addition to his five assists.
Defensively, junior
Nikko DiPonio led the squad with eight groundballs and three caused turnovers. Overall, fifteen different players marked a ground ball, the team's total adding up to 30, while six players had a caused turnover. In goal,
Colin Lenskold recorded 11 saves, facing 39 shots.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Faulkner earned his first-career hat trick.
- Stines added his name to the record book under Individual Single Game Points, earning the ninth slot with seven and tying with alumni Jordan Hyde.
- The Utes outshot their opponent in three out of the four quarters, adding up 48-39 shots in the Utes favor. Out of those attempts, 27 were on goal, three more than Delaware.
- This marks the second game this season that the Utes are the first on the scoreboard and the first to shoot.
