CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In its third trip to Charlottesville, Va., the University of Utah lacrosse program went down at the hands of the University of Virginia Cavaliers with a 14-9 finish at Klockner Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Down seven and coming off a scoreless quarter, the Utes were able to add four goals to their total to help close the deficit. Virginia was the first to hit the net, only the second time this season that Utah's opponent is the first to score, and the Cavaliers went on a 3-0 run before sophomore
Cade Faulkner was able to make the first of his three goals.
GAME LEADERS
Faulkner led the Utah offense with three goals, accomplishing his fourth hat trick of the season and his career. Freshman
Luke McNamara was the only other Ute to tally multiple goals, marking down two with his four shots. Sophomore
Bryce Madden was one of the four Utah players to find a single goal against the Cavaliers, with Madden's FOGO (face-off, get off) mark counting for his first goal and point of this season. Freshman
Chase Robertson also found a single goal, putting up a career high of eight shots, sitting just above Faulkner's six.
Nikko DiPonio was at the top of the defensive roster, finding seven ground balls and one caused turnover. Six different Utes, including DiPonio, tallied a caused-turnover. Junior
Tyler Kloeckl had a successful game in the face-off X, winning 14-of-23 for the Utes and grabbing six ground balls on the way. In the cage, junior
Colin Lenskold saved 14 of Virginia's attempts, bumping his season's save percentage to 49.5%.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Faulkner is the first Ute this season to mark down four games with three plus goals.
- Madden attempted four face-offs, winning three and finding his first point of the season off a FOGO goal.
- Utah and Virginia tied for saves, both goalkeepers marking 14 saves.
- The Utes accumulated more ground balls than their opponent, 41 to Virginia's 39, just two away from making it in to the record book.
- This match forces Utah to an all-time record of 0-3 in Charlottesville.
