SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah lacrosse team finished their last home game of the season with a 17-14 win over Jacksonville on Saturday, April 12 at Ute Field. The Senior Day win pushes Utah's conference record to 3-0, and 4-7 overall.
FIRST QUARTER
Utah jumped out to an early lead and held off Jacksonville for a 3-2 advantage after the first period. Freshman
Chase Robertson opened the scoring with his eighth goal of the season off an assist from sophomore
Cade Faulkner, who later added a goal of his own. Freshman
Sky Rold added a third goal for the Utes, notching his second of the season to cap a 3-0 run. Utah maintained its edge despite multiple Jacksonville possessions and capitalized on extra-man opportunities following back-to-back penalties on the Dolphins.
SECOND QUARTER
Utah maintained its momentum in the second period, outscoring Jacksonville 3-2 to take a 6-4 lead into halftime. Junior
Ryan Stines netted two goals in the frame, marking his 15th and 16th of the season. Senior
Cody Hart capped the period with a last-second goal, collecting a ground ball and finishing just before the horn to give the Utes a boost heading into the break.
Defensively, Utah forced multiple Jacksonville turnovers with key plays from juniors
Nikko DiPonio and
Bryce Horton, and sophomore
Luca Pivetta, while staying efficient in transition with nearly perfect clears.
THIRD QUARTER
Utah showed out in the third period, scoring seven goals to seize full control of the game with a 13-7 edge on the Dolphins. DiPonio opened the half with a quick goal just seven seconds in, assisted by junior
Bryce Madden, who dominated at the face-off X throughout the quarter. Freshman
Luke McNamara opened the run with a clean finish off a pass from Overly, as Rold followed with a strong dodge from behind the cage for his third goal of the season. Junior
Jake Likes buried one in transition after an assist from Faulkner, as Overly got on the board himself later in the quarter. Sophomore
Marco Pascarella capped off the third quarter with a buzzer beater to give the Utes the advantage heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Dolphins found an early man-up goal, but Utah responded with a smooth transition play capped off by Faulkner, who netted his 20th goal of the season. However, Jacksonville clawed back with a 4-0 run, two of which came from a two-man-up situation. McNamara halted the Dolphin's momentum with his third goal of the game off a pass from junior
Zachary White, pushing the margin back to two.
Stines delivered the dagger with just under three minutes remaining, scoring off a feed from sophomore
Ben Trask to cap Utah's offensive effort. The Utes held strong through the final possessions, closing out the game with a 17-14 win.
GAME LEADERS
Stines tallied a season high four goals on eight shots, as McNamara recorded his third hat trick on the season.
DiPonio led the Utes with eight ground balls and one caused turnover, ahead of Pivetta and McNamara who each found four ground balls a piece. Madden collected seven at face-off and won 15 of his 26 attempts. In the cage, junior
Colin Lenskold saved seven of the Dolphins' attempts and faced 36 shots.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Utah now sits on a 4-1 all-time record over Jacksonville.
- This marks the second consecutive game this season where multiple defensive players have tallied a goal.
- Utah tallied 40 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers, compared to Jacksonville's 21 ground balls and only three caused turnovers.
- This is the eighth game this season that the Utes have been the first on the scoreboard.
- Two Utes tallied hat tricks, McNamara (third of the season) and Stines (first of the season).
