SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's lacrosse team continued their winning streak with a 16-10 win over the Mercer Bears on Saturday, April 5 at Ute Field. The Utes are now 2-0 in ASUN play and 3-7 overall.
FIRST QUARTER
Utah came out strong in the first quarter and took control early, building a 7–2 lead over Mercer. Junior
Dallin Tanner opened up the scoring with the first goal of the game and his first of the season. Utah put up another score, this time from freshman
Luke McNamara, followed quickly by tallies from freshman
Sky Rold and junior
Nikko DiPonio to cap a 4-0 run within a two-minute span.
Mercer broke the streak with a goal late in the quarter, but Utah continued to apply pressure, answering with goals from
Ryan Stines,
Cade Faulkner, and
Jonas Hunter to close out the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
Freshman
Nathan Chalmers opened the second quarter with a man-up goal for the Utes, assisted by junior
Will Overly, to extend Utah's lead 8–2. Mercer cut into the deficit, finding three goals in two minutes. Senior
Cody Hart added one for the Utes off a caused turnover, followed by back-to-back goals from Faulkner and senior
Luc Charbonnier, both assisted by Stines, who continued his play-making streak. The Bears pushed back, tallying four more goals, putting the Utes at a 12-9 edge going into halftime.
THIRD QUARTER
The Utes opened the second half with a man-up goal from Overly, assisted by freshman
Chase Robertson, to build momentum early in the quarter. Junior goalie
Colin Lenskold continued his strong play between the pipes, coming up with several key saves to keep Utah's lead intact. Mercer managed a last-second goal to close the quarter, but the Utes kept their lead heading into the fourth 13-10.
FOURTH QUARTER
The last quarter found Mercer scoreless, as Utah's defense dominated the field. Overly ignited some momentum with his second goal of the day, while Hunter and McNamara tacked on insurance goals, both set up by Stines. Utah controlled the tempo and closed out the game with a 16-10 win over the Bears.
GAME LEADERS
Twelve different Utes found the back of the net and four put up two goals apiece. Rold scored his first career goal, as Stines continued his dominant play with a team-high 6 assists and 1 goal.
DiPonio collected eight ground balls to lead the Utes, as
Bryce Madden collected seven at face-off and won 10 of his 18 attempts. In net, Lenskold recorded 13 saves, posting a .565 save percentage and limiting Mercer to 10 goals in the victory.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Utah is now sitting on a 4-1 all-time record against Mercer.
- The Utes tallied 13 caused turnovers, eight more than the Bears.
- Marking 59 shots to Mercer's 39, over twenty Utes tallied an attempt.
- This marks Utah's first time this season shutting out an opponent in the fourth quarter.
- Three Utes recorded their first goal of the season: Dallin Tanner, Sky Rold and Nikko DiPonio.
- Utah picked up 48 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers compared to Mercer's 26 ground balls and five caused turnovers.
- Stines tied his season-high of seven points, this time with six assists and one score.
