FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Utah softball team suffered a pair of losses in extra innings on Sunday, falling to the UCSB Gauchos, 7-5, and the Fresno State Bulldogs, 6-5.
Utah's record is now 4-6.
Utah vs. UCSB
The lead changed hands multiple times in the Utes' second matchup against the Gauchos in three days. UCSB was the first team on the board, tallying single runs in the first and second innings.
Utah responded in their half of the second thanks to a lead-off knock by
Hailey Deter, a run-scoring error and a
Shonty Passi RBI double. The Utes moved in front for the first time in the fourth when
Jolie Mayfield singled to start the frame and pinch-runner
Marley Espiau came across on a groundout.
That advantage only lasted until the top of the fifth, however, as UCSB quickly evened the score. That deadlock would remain into extra innings, when the Gauchos put together a four-run rally for a 7-3 lead. Utah tried to stage a comeback in their half of the eighth, plating two runs and loading the bases, but ultimately fell short.
Utah vs. Fresno State
The Utes' second game of the day was another hard-fought affair and began with Utah moving in front early on a throwing error that sent
Kennedy Proctor to the plate.
The Bulldogs immediately tied the score, but visitors struck back in the top of the second, loading the bases with one out for
Kaylah Nelsen. The Utes' first basemen cleared the bases by lining a three-run double into left-center for a 4-1 edge.
While Fresno State was again able to draw level,
Hailee White provided Utah with another lead in the sixth on an RBI single. Unfortunately, another answer from the home team put the score at 5-5 after seven stanzas and the Bulldogs pushed across the winning run in extra innings to bring the evening to an end.

One more game in Fresno remains on Utah's schedule and will pit them against Fresno State at 11 a.m. PT (12 p.m. MT) on Monday.
