FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Utah softball team was dealt another close loss on Monday, falling 4-3 to the Fresno State Bulldogs at Margie Wright Diamond on the final day of the Fresno State Kickoff Classic.
Utah is now 4-7 in 2025.
The day began with Utah denting home plate almost immediately, as an error and a single brought up
Shonty Passi with two outs. The sophomore shortstop ripped a two-run triple into the right field corner, the first three-bagger of her collegiate career, and the visitors led 2-0.
In the circle for the Utes was
Brooklyn Carreon and she spent the first two innings silencing Fresno State's bats, but a pair of hits followed by a three-run homer off the bat of Lauren Almeida allowed the home team to jump in front. Carreon and
Shelbee Jones kept the Utes in the game after that by not allowing the Bulldogs to plate a run over the next four stanzas.
Utah's lineup came to life again in the seventh, using a hit, an error and a stolen base to put runners on second and third with nobody out.
Reese Lee then lifted a sacrifice fly into left to knot the score, but the Bulldogs ended the game by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Lee finished the day with a double to her credit, as well as the sacrifice fly. She has now hit safely in 10 straight games and reached base in all 11 Utah contests in 2025.
Up Next
The next tournament on Utah's fight card is the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, where the Utes will play five times in three days, starting with matchups against Oregon and Long Beach State on Friday in Cathedral City, Calif.
