SALT LAKE CITY— The University of Utah women's basketball team heads up north to face in-state rival, Utah State at 6 p.m. in Logan, Utah marking the Utes first road game of the season. The Utes lead the Aggies with an overall series record of 35-2.

LAST TIME OUT
The Utes started their season at home in the Jon M. Huntsman center with an 88-62 win over Sioux Falls in on Monday. Utah started off strong over Sioux Falls with a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Utah were led by freshmen
Evelina Otto and
Avery Hjelmstad. Otto led the team with 15 points and nine rebounds. She went 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Hjelmstad posted 14 points total with four made from deep.
Utah outshot Sioux Falls from the field, 44% to 34%. In addition, the Utes outrebounded the Cougars, 49-27. All 11 Utes that touched the court Monday afternoon made a field goal and contributed to the final score.
THE UTES
Utah returns four key contributors from the 2024-25 season including
Maty Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Brooke Walker and
Reese Ross. This year the Utes welcome back
Lani White who played at Utah for her freshman and sophomore seasons. White spent her junior season at Virginia Tech but has returned to finish her collegiate career where she started it all, as a Ute. The Utes welcome one true transfer in
Kamryn Mafua and four freshmen in
LA Sneed,
Ella Todd,
Avery Hjelmstad and
Evelina Otto.
THE KEY IS WILKE
Maty Wilke is Utah's top returner. She finished last season just shy of the elite 50/40/90 status. Wilke shot 46.7% from the field, 42.9% from three and 95% from the line. She was fourth on the team in scoring averaging 9.2 points per game. Wilke finished the season third on the team in made three-pointers with 57 on the year. She averaged 2.2 rebounds, posted 62 assists and 34 steals. She played in 30 games for the Utes and started in six. Wilke has 879 total points in her collegiate career and is well on her way to the exclusive 1,000 point club.
In the season opener, Wilke recorded nine points and tied the game high with four assists.
HEAD COACH GAVIN PETERSEN
Petersen enters his second season and first full season as head coach. He was named the head coach of the Utah women's basketball team on Nov. 19, 2024 just four games into the 2024-25 season. He has a 20-8 record in his career. Petersen became the fastest coach in program history to get a Top-10 victory when he led the Utes to a 78-67 win over No. 3 Notre Dame (11/30/24). He brings 23 seasons of college coaching experience to the role, he is in his 11th season overall with the Utes and spent the previous five years as associate head coach under Lynne Roberts.
Petersen has been a part of the staff that has led the Utes to seven postseason appearances—including four NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen—and five 20-win seasons, as well as regular appearances in the AP Top 25.
SCOUTING UTAH STATE
Utah State opens their season against the Utes in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Utah State Aggies held a 4-27 overall record during the 2024-2025 season and went 3-15 in the Mountain West Conference.
The Aggies' see returners in senior Jamisyn Heaton and sophomore Elise Livingston. Heaton had an average of 8.9 points and a team-high of 5.4 rebounds per game. Livingston had an average 5.6 points per game and shot 75.7 percent from the free throw line.
This is the 38th matchup between the Utes and the Aggies in program history. Utah holds a 15-2 record over Utah State while playing in Logan. The last time Utah played in The Spectrum was in 2017 and Utah picked up a 79-44 win.
The Aggies are coached by Wesley Brooks who is in his second season with an overall record of 4-27.

The Utes return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. to face in-state foe Utah Valley, in a Military Appreciation game. The game will be streaming on ESPN+ with live stats and radio available as well.
