SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball team took on Sioux falls in the first official game of the season on Monday morning in the annual Future Scholars Kids Game. The Utes picked up an 88-62 win giving them a 1-0 record on the season.
Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Evelina Otto who put up 15 points and Avery Hjelmstad who dropped 14. Otto also led the Utes with nine rebounds.
GAME SUMMARY The Utes started off strong, scoring 22 points in the first quarter. Reese Ross began the game hot going 2-of-2 from the field. Maty Wilke also started strong, scoring five points going 2-of-3 from the field and 1-of-2 for three. The Utes ended the quarter on an 8-0 run making the score 22-11 in Utah's favor. Utah continued the momentum through the second quarter and extended their lead to 43-25 at the end of the first half.
The Utes continued steadily through the third quarter, Evelina Otto, Reese Ross and Maty Wilke all scored four points helping extend the lead to 63-37.
In the fourth quarter, the Utes continued to excel. Avery Hjelmstad scored 11 points going 3-of-5 from the field, 3-of-4 from long and 2-of-2 from the line. Utah ended the game with an 88-62 victory over Sioux Falls.
LEADERS Utah had two players score in double digits. Evelina Otto led the team with 15 points going 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Avery Hjelmstad contributed to the Utes win scoring a total of 14 points including four made from deep.
Evelnina Otto controlled the boards with nine rebounds while Samantha Crispe added seven. Lani White and LA Sneed added six boards each for the Utes. Walker and Wilke tied for the game high with four assists.
COMPARISON Utah shot 44% from the field while Sioux Falls shot 34% from the field. Utah went 31% from three making 10-of-32 while Sioux Falls went 33% shooting 6-of-18. The Utes went 22-of-26 from the free throw line for 85% while Sioux Falls went 16-of-20 for 80%.
The Utes outrebounded Sioux Falls 49-27. Utah showed strong depth scoring 39 points off the bench while Sioux Falls scored 20. Utah dominated the paint scoring 36 while Sioux Falls had just 18. The Utes posted 21 assists to the Cougars' nine.
NOTABLES Utah is now 1-0 on the season. This is the fifth year in a row Utah has opened the season with a win.
Utah had 21 assists on 28 made baskets for 75%.
All 11 Utes that touched the court made a field goal and contributed to the total score.
Both Reese Ross and Brooke Walker didn't miss a shot. Ross went 3-of-3 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line. While Walker went 4-of-4 from the field including one from deep.
UP NEXT Utah will face back-to-back in-state rivals first heading up north to face Utah State on Friday, Nov. 7 in Logan, Utah and then will return home to the Huntsman Center to host the Wolverines of Utah Valley on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Military Appreciation game.
