Roberts homered for the Utes in Friday night’s 19-7 setback

PHOENIX – The Utah baseball team fell to Arizona State by a 19-7 score on Friday night in the first game of the teams' series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The middle game of the weekend set is scheduled for Saturday, May 7 beginning at 7 p.m. MDT (6 p.m. in Phoenix).

Second baseman Landon Frei was 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and two walks, hitting safely for the fifth straight game. Shortstop Matt Richardson also had a 2-for-3 evening with a double and a run scored. Right fielder Kai Roberts hit a three-run home run, his fourth dinger of the season.

Arizona State got on the board with a two-run second inning, but the Utes leveled the score in the top of the third. Richardson smacked a one-out double and came home on a base hit off the bat of center fielder Dakota Duffalo, then Duffalo scored the tying run on a two-bagger from Frei.

But the Sun Devils came back with seven unanswered runs, tallying a three-spot in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth for a 9-2 lead.

Utah (25-18-1, 10-12 Pac-12) got four back in the fifth inning, thanks in part to a three-run homer by Roberts. It came after catcher Davis Cop led off the frame with a single and trotted to second on an eight-pitch walk to Duffalo. Roberts then clubbed the 1-1 pitch over the right center field scoreboard for his fourth big fly of the season.

Designated hitter Jayden Kiernan added an RBI single later in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-6.

ASU continued to add to its tally along the home stretch of the ballgame. The Utes posted their final run of the night on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
