The First Pitch: Things to Know
Coming off of a Tuesday afternoon win over Dixie State and triumphs in six of their last seven games, the Utah baseball team hosts a key Pac-12 Conference series this weekend vs. No. 2 Oregon State. First pitch in the series opener and middle games are slated for 11 a.m. at Smith's Ballpark, before a 7 p.m. finale on Sunday.
- Utah sits in a tie for sixth place in the Pac-12 standings headed into the weekend, sharing the spot with Arizona State. The Utes' last conference series saw the ballclub take two of three on the road at USC, coming up just short Sunday in the bid for the series sweep.
- On paper, the series will see a clash of the Pac-12's two longest active reached base streaks. Utah's TJ Clarkson has reached base safely in 38 straight games heading into the weekend, short of only OSU's Wade Meckler (40) for the conference lead.
- Oregon State took the first two games of last year's series between these teams out in Corvallis. The Utes earned a 5-3 win on Sunday over the then-No. 21 ranked Beavers behind a 7.2-inning start from David Watson. It included seven strikeouts for Watson, who allowed three runs on five hits and two walks.
- In the last Utah-Oregon State series in Salt Lake City (2018), the Utes came up with the series win vs. No. 1-ranked and eventual College World Series champion Beavers. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. had a two-run homer late in the rubber game, finishing 3-for-6 in an 11-8 victory. Utah and Arizona were the only Pac-12 teams to win a conference series over Oregon State that season.
- Utah reached 20 wins with the rubber game triumph over Arizona on April 16. It ensured the first 20-win season for the program since 2017 (27) and tied the fastest that the club reached the mark since 2011 (35 games).
Recap in a Minute
The Utes picked up a commanding 12-1 victory over Dixie State this past Tuesday thanks to all-around balanced effort. Every player in the Utah lineup had a hit, four players had three apiece and the team combined for 19 total.
- Leadoff hitter and right fielder Kai Roberts went 3-for-4 Tuesday night with a career-high five RBI, adding two walks and two runs scored. Landon Frei, catcher Davis Cop and shortstop Gabe Singer also each had three hits. It was Singer's first three-hit game as a Ute, and the Salt Lake City native also added two key sacrifice bunts.
- Center fielder Carter Booth scored four times, his most at Utah and tying the most by a Ute for a game this season.
- Right-handed pitcher Randon Hostert (3-0) went two innings in the start on a staff day for the Utes arms. Hostert did not walk anyone, struck out three and allowed Dixie State's lone run on four hits.
