The First Pitch: Things to Know

Smith's Ballpark will see the Utah baseball team back on the home diamond this weekend, continuing a six-game home stand as Mercer comes to Salt Lake City. The three-game series begins Friday night with a 6 p.m. first pitch, followed up by a 2 p.m. game on Saturday and an early 11 a.m. start on Sunday morning.
This is the first meeting between Utah and the Bears in program history. The Utes last faced a Southern Conference team in the 2019 season, when the club dealt Western Carolina a 14-0 shutout. Mercer is the first SoCon opponent the Utes have hosted since joining the Pac-12 Conference.
TJ Clarkson, who made his first career starts in left field this week, has reached base safely in 19 consecutive games. It is the longest active streak by a Ute and second-longest by a Utah player since the 2018 season. His six homes runs, which include a pair on Tuesday night, currently rank fourth in the Pac-12.
Right-handed closer Blake Whiting remains atop the conference with four saves on the season.

Recap in a Minute

Utah is coming off of a pair of midweek victories vs. Northern Colorado on Tuesday (18-2) and Wednesday (8-7).

On the front end of the pair, an eight-run second inning sparked the Utes early in the 18-2 victory. The big frame was highlighted by TJ Clarkson's first career grand slam, one of three homers for Utah on the night. Clarkson had another two-run shot in the seventh inning, and Carter Booth had a solo homer in the third, ultimately finishing a double short of the cycle. The pitching staff did not surrender a walk all night—the second time the club has been walk-free this season.
The team had to rally from an early 5-0 deficit in Wednesday's contest and led after seven innings, but ultimately it took walk-off heroics in the ninth as Matt Richardson sprinted home with the winning run on a wild pitch. Five Utes had multi-hit performances, and Chase Anderson hit his second home run in the last four games en route to a four-RBI night.
