Utah returns to action on Sunday at Ute Field.

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 contest to the visiting Washington State Cougars on Thursday evening at Ute Field.

Utah (5-5-1, 0-2-0 Pac-12) had seven shots against the Cougars (8-1-1, 2-0-0 Pac-12), with multiple quality looks coming in the second half. Chelsea Peterson continued to pick up saves as she had seven more tonight and is up to 44 saves on the season.

"We created quality chances and did enough to get a positive result tonight, and I feel for our team to come off the field with nothing to show for it," remarked head coach Hideki Nakada. "Washington State is always a tough team to play against, but I thought we did a good job of playing through their pressure, and, unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on those chances we created."

In a physical matchup that saw 26 fouls called and four yellow cards, the Utes looked to get the offense going early. In the 22nd minute of the match, the Utes Haley Farrar took a shot to the upper right corner of the goal put the Cougars goalie made the save, keeping the game scoreless.

Washington State put two shots on goal within a minute of each other in the first half, but Utah's Peterson continued to pick up saves and kept them off the board.

Late in the first half, Utah had the last chance to score as Megan Lusher had the ball on top of the box and turned and took a left-footed shot that was saved, keeping the game scoreless heading to halftime.

The physical play continued in the second half, and the Cougars came out trying to score, but Peterson tallied two saves in the first 10 minutes of the half, keeping it scoreless.

In the 59th minute of the match, Eden Jacobsen and Taliana Kaufusi looked to have the advantage on a good chance. Kaufusi found Jacobsen, who was outside the box and fired a shot that went wide of goal. Utah had a quality chance to score following a yellow card in the 64th minute of the game as Erin Bridges shot went just high of goal.

Utah continued to attack and had more quality chances to score. Jacobsen sent a ball into the middle of the box for Lusher, who took the shot, and the ball went wide of goal. Less than a minute later, the Utes had a corner kick, and Bridges had another quality chance to score, but it was wide.

The Cougars broke the scoreless match in the 77th minute of the game when Margie Detrizio found Grayson Lynch for a goal putting Washington State ahead 1-0.

The Utes had one more shot in the 89th minute as they took the corner kick. Maryn Granger had a header that went wide of goal, and the Utes would fall 1-0 to Washington State.
