ST. GEORGE, Utah – Utah women's soccer picked up its first win of the 2021 season Thursday night in St. George, defeating Dixie State in double overtime after
Hanna Olsen netted her second goal of the match to hand the Utes a 2-1 victory over the Trailblazers at Zions Bank Stadium.
Utah (1-1) put the pressure on Dixie State (0-1) early in the game and took an early advantage on just its fourth shot of the game when Olsen tallied her first career goal as a Ute. Off an assist from
Anna Escobedo, Olsen sent one past Dixie State's goalkeeper on the left to give Utah a 1-0 advantage in the 22nd minute.
Not too long after,
Avery Brady sailed a shot just over the crossbar, keeping the Trailblazers' Hollee Herick in goal alert. As the half approached,
Erin Bridges saw another chance at a Ute goal, but narrowly missed it high as well. At the half, Utah held a 9-3 advantage in shots, which included back-to-back attemps by
Brooklyn James and
McKenna Baillie just before half.
The second half was evenly played as both teams tabbed eight shots – five on goal – apiece.
Taliana Kaufusi put up another shot right out of the gates for Utah and was followed by another Brady attempt. After a series of defensive stands from Utah at the midway mark of the second half, which included two saves by
SJ Edwards, Dixie State persisted and eventually got one through that was put away by Whitley Griffiths in the 73rd minute.
Utah rattled off a sequence of four shot attempts immediately after the Trailblazers' goal, but came up scoreless. With time ticking and the match tied 1-1, Dixie State applied the pressure and got off four shots in the final two minutes of regulation. Unable to convert, Utah and Dixie State were sent to overtime.
The first overtime saw a shot missed left of the goal by Brady and Utah's only other opportunity from a corner kick nearing the 94th minute where Olsen couldn't convert her attempt and missed it high. Utah's defense stifled Dixie State in the first OT and held the Trailblazers to zero shot attempts.
In the second overtime, the Utes fended off a corner kick to retake possession. A couple minutes later it was
Courtney Talbot who beat the defense and sent a cross to the middle of the box to find Olsen running through and sent a laser to the back of the net to end the match and earn Utah its first win of the 2021 season.
Utah will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 14 to take on Weber State in Herriman, Utah. The Utes and Wildcats will play at the Zions Bank Training Center at 1 p.m. MT.
