CLEMSON, S.C. - Utah Soccer dropped its 2019 opener this evening at Clemson, 2-0. Both teams entered tonight's game receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll.
"I am really pleased we kept fighting all game and were knocking on the door in the second half.," head coach
Rich Manning said. "The team showed great character and heart but it took us a little too long to shake off the rust. I am disappointed with the two goals coming from set pieces but we got to see a lot of different players and that will make us better for Sunday."
The Tigers took a lead just before the half hour from a free kick. A ball was floated in from the far left side of the field by sophomore Renee Guion and freshman Hal Hershfelt got her head to the ball before Ute goalkeeper
Carly Nelson, directing a try into the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Clemson netted again in the 64th minute from another set piece. Utah committed a foul just outside the penalty area and senior Dani Antieau bent her try around the wall and into the side netting for a 2-0 cushion.
Holly Daugirda registered Utah's only shot of the first half while Clemson forced four saves out of Nelson. The Utes found their footing in a more evenly played second half as
Kristin Fairbairn,
Aleea Gwerder and
Makayla Christensen all forced saves from CU goalkeeper Sandy MacIver.
"I thought Holly had a really solid game," Manning added. "We asked her to do a couple things and she handled her duties well.
Kristin Fairbairn and
Anna Escobedo came off the bench and gave us a spark when we needed it."
Clemson improved to 24-1-1 in season openers
The Utes are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. CT when they travel to play Alabama
