ON DECK
Utah heads to No. 2 UCLA for a three-game Pac-12 series. The Utes swept the No. 10 Bruins at Easton Stadium two years ago but have dropped four of the last five series between the teams.
Utah currently ranks 12th in the nation in terms of schedule strength and has been in the top 20 nationally the last four seasons. The Utes have now played four of the top five teams in the nation this month.Â
BARRERA BREAKING OUT FOR UTES
Alyssa Barrera leads the Pac-12 and sits seventh nationally with six triples, three of which came against Cal. She has started all 147 games of her Utah career.
Barrera ranks 10th in the Pac-12 with a .389 batting average and 11th with 49 hits. In conference play, she ranks fourth in batting average (.462), sixth in hits (18), seventh in on-base percentage (.523) and ninth in slugging (.769).
Over the last three weekends against nationally ranked Pac-12 teams, Barrera is hitting .407 with a .630 slugging percentage and ranks second on the team in runs batted in.
Barrera, named to the 2018 USA Softball Player of the Year "Watch List", also made the short list of finalists for the 2017 Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award.
Last season, she hit .322, the second-best average on the team. As a freshman, she ranked sixth in the Pac-12 and led the Utes with 46 runs scored.
She was also named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team and All-Freshman Team.
BONSTROM BLOWING UP
In her first season with the Utes, freshman Ellessa Bonstrom has shown she will be a force to be reckoned with in years to come.
In Pac-12 play, she is fifth with nine walks, eighth with four home runs and owns a .722 slugging percentage, as well as a .435 on-base percentageÂ
DICKMAN HAS BEEN DYNAMITE
Over the last five weeks games, Ally Dickman is batting .333, while leading the team in homers and runs driven in. For the season, she ranks among the top 20 in the Pac-12 (.595).
The senior was recently awarded the Wellness Advocate Award from the athletic department for demonstrating commitment to improvement in personal wellness and courage in advocating the importance of mental health awareness among their fellow student-athletes.
Dickman owns the longest hitting streak (10 games) and on-base streak (12 games) for the Utes this season and is currently the toughest at bat in the Pac-12 with just five strikeouts in 111 at bats.Â
WEEKEND RECAP
Utah dropped the first two games of its series against No. 3 Washington last weekend but won the finale against the Huskies.
Trailing 4-0, Utah scored a run before Alyssa Barrera cranked a grand slam off Gabby Plain. Barrera was also the hero the last time Utah beat a team ranked in the Top 5 nationally. She delivered a walk-off hit to seal a series against No. 1 Arizona in 2017, also at home.
Utah entered Saturday, 4-for-44 against Plain during her first two seasons before hitting her for a season-high five runs. Ally Dickman had another strong series, hitting .500 (4-for-8).
DYNAMIC DUO TURNING TWO
Utah has turned 23 double plays, the most in the Pac-12 and 17th nationally. The Utes turned three in a game vs. Ohio State earlier this year.Â
Julia Noskin and BreOnna Castaneda have combined for 200 assists, 50 more than second best in the conference (Inouye/Young, STAN)
