COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Utah Softball capped a winning weekend with a 1-0 win over Texas State on the final day of the Texas A&M Tournament.
Katie Donovan and
Miranda Viramontes combined on Utah's fourth shutout of the season. Donovan started and improved to 5-1 on the season. She went 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out five batters. Viramontes earned her third save in as many days by striking out four of the next six batters.Â
They needed to be sharp in the circle because the Ute bats were held in check by the Bobcat pitchers. Utah did not record a hit until the third inning, but made it count where it mattered most, the scoreboard.Â
Abby Robertson started things off by blooping a double into right field. The Utah freshmen continued to make an impact as
Alyssa Palacios bunted Robertson over to third and
Chandler Walter laid down the perfect squeeze to score the game's only run.
TSU had a chance to get on the scoreboard in the sixth, loading the bases. Viramontes entered and calmly struck out a pair of batters to kill off the threat and keep the Utes up a run.
For the weekend,
BreOnna Castaneda led the Utes, batting .455, while
Hailey Hilburn drove in five runs and three players,
Kelly Martinez,
Alyssa Barrera and
Julia Noskin all scored three times. Donovan went 2-0 on the weekend while Viramontes struck out 18 batters in just two starts.
Utah travels to College Park, Maryland next weekend and begins play on Thursday. The Utes play a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) and the host Terrapins, starting at 2 p.m. ET
