Utah swept in first Pac-12 series
Utah started well as Alyssa Barrera and BreOnna Castaneda singled before Heather Bowen smacked a RBI double down the left-field line.
Arizona put its first two runners on in the second against Katie Donovan but three-straight ground balls kept it off the board and the Utes in front.
Utah extended the lead in the third when Barrera got hit and stole second. An error by the UA first baseman allowed her to come around and score while keeping the inning going. Alyssa Palacios followed with a double to bring home Kelly Martinez for a 3-0 lead.
For the second game in a row, Arizona came alive in the fourth. Malia Martinez doubled to open the scoring and a walk would prompt a pitching change by the Utes. Joelle Krist singled up the middle to score another run before Alyssa Palamino laced a two-run double to right for a 4-3 lead. Reyna Carranco followed with a sacrifice fly and Jessie Harper capped the inning with a two-run homer.
The Utes tried to get back in the game during the fifth when Castaneda worked a walk and Martinez singled, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Arizona ended the scoring with a blast when Dejah Mulipola uncorked a three-run homer in the sixth. On the weekend, UA hit .345 with two outs and .382 with runners in scoring position. On the other side, Utah hit .160 and .208 in both respective categories.
The Utes will stay in Arizona for a doubleheader on Tuesday at Grand Canyon. First pitch against the Antelopes is scheduled for 12 pm.
