SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah baseball team plays its second game of the season against BYU on Tuesday, May 9, before continuing Pac-12 play this weekend against USC.
Tuesday's game against BYU begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be aired on BYUtv with radio at ESPN 700.
It is the second game Utah and BYU will play on the diamond this season. BYU won game one of the series, 11-6, back on March 28. A third scheduled game of the series was rained out on April 18.
The series is worth three total points towards the Deseret First Dual rivalry series, now in its 10th season. Utah clinched the overall victory, 26-6, with wins in football, volleyball, women's basketball, gymnastics, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's tennis, with just baseball remaining. If the teams split the two games, the winner will be determined on run differential.
For the Utes, freshman
Chase Bauerle is slated to make his first career start on the mound.
Utah (20-21, 9-12 Pac-12) ranks third in the Pac-12 with a .289 batting average. The Utes are second in the league in runs scored (256), RBI (230) and on-base percentage (.377) while ranking third in hits (417).
The Utes rank sixth in the Pac-12 in earned run average (4.00). Utah leads the league in fewest home runs allowed (12) and pickoffs (11, tied).
Dallas Carroll and
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., are two of the best hitters in the league. The two are tied for fifth in the Pac-12 with 62 hits each. Carroll is third in the Pac-12 in batting average (.383) and second in on-base percentage (.469) and slugging percentage (.586). Keirsey is tied for second in the conference in triples (five) and tied for eighth in runs scored (37).
Jayson Rose is sixth in the Pac-12 with 67 strikeouts and is tied for fifth in the league with six wins. He recently set the Utah career record for strikeouts (241).
BYU is 29-14 on the season and 17-4 in the West Coast Conference. The Cougars are ranked 18th in the Collegiate Baseball poll and on a nine-game winning streak.
Utah's series against USC begins on Saturday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. MT.
