SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah baseball team couldn't hold on in the ninth inning as the Utes fell to UC Riverside, 7-5, to close out the three-game non-conference series.
Utah held as much as a 5-0 lead and led 5-4 entering the ninth inning before the Highlanders scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead.
Utah was led by three hits and two RBI from
Zack Moeller.
Dominic Foscalina had two hits and two RBI while
Chandler Anderson and
Dallas Carroll also had a pair of hits each.
Josh Lapiana threw five innings on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
Trenton Stoltz threw 1/3 of an inning while
Jacob Rebar pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Rebar falls to 3-5 on the year with the loss.
Chase Bauerle allowed a run and a hit, throwing one inning.
Utah took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Carroll walked and scored on an RBI double from Moeller, while Anderson singled home Moeller for the second run of the inning. The Utes scored three runs in the third inning. Carroll,
Hunter Simmons and Moeller hit three-straight singles and after a walk to
Wade Gulden to load the bases, Foscalina sent in two runs with a single to make it 5-0, Utes.
UC Riverside began its rally in the fourth inning. Back-to-back leadoff hits scored a run, and after two outs and a walk, two additional singles added two more runs to make it 5-3. The Highlanders added a run in the sixth on a ground out following a pair of leadoff hits.
The Utes stranded two on base in the fifth inning, and Utah was unable to capitalize on hits in the seventh and eighth innings.
UC Riverside loaded the bases with one out in the ninth following a pair of walks (one intentional) and an infield hit, which was followed by a two-RBI single to take the lead as well as an insurance run on a sacrifice fly.
The Utes head south on Tuesday to face BYU in a non-conference game on May 9 at 6:00 p.m. MT.
