Carroll Homers in Utah Baseball’s 7-3 Loss to UCLA

LOS ANGELES – A three-run home run off the bat of Dallas Carroll was the highlight for the Utah baseball team as the Utes fell to UCLA, 7-3, to open a three-game series against the Bruins.
UCLA led 4-3 after two innings before Carroll's third-inning home run brought Utah to within a run, 4-3. UCLA added two insurance runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth for its 7-3 advantage.
Carroll went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Utah. Chandler Anderson, Hunter Simmons, Zack Moeller and Wade Gulden also had hits for the Utes off UCLA ace Griffin Canning, who pitched a complete game.
Jayson Rose earned the loss on the mound in the start after pitching 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with two walks and a strikeout. Josh Tedeschi was strong in relief, striking out two over 2 1/3 innings while not allowing a hit. Trenton Stoltz also pitched 1 1/3 innings.
UCLA scored its first run in the first inning after an error following a hit batter. The Bruins scored three runs in the second inning off of four hits, including a leadoff home run.
A leadoff walk to Oliver Dunn and two-out Anderson single set up Carroll's home run in the third, cutting UCLA's lead to 4-3.
The Utes had a strong chance to increase their lead in the sixth inning following a single and walk but both were stranded on base after a strikeout.
A pair of doubles and a walk helped lead to two more runs for UCLA in the fifth inning, while the Bruins made it 7-3 with a run in the sixth after a run scored on a ground out following a walk and single.
Utah and UCLA play game two of the series on Saturday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. PT/7:00 p.m. MT.
