LOS ANGELES - Despite out-hitting the Trojans, the Utah baseball team dropped its series opener against USC on Friday night.
USC broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth and added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Jayson Rose pitched seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts. Andre Jackson surrendered two runs in the eighth inning with a strikeout while Trenton Stoltz allowed a hit and walk after throwing 2/3 of an inning.
Utah was led at the plate by Dallas Carroll, who went 3-for-4 while Cody Scaggari had two doubles and scored two runs, and Josh Rose also had a pair of hits.
After leaving a pair of runners on base in the first inning, the Utes took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Scaggari led off the inning with a double down the left field line before scoring on a ground out. USC came back to tie it in the bottom of the second after a solo home run.
USC took a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. A leadoff single and stolen base led to a run scoring after a pair of ground outs.
It was the Utes turn to re-tie the game in the sixth, again off a one-out double off the bat of Scaggari. Max Schuman followed with an RBI single, to score Scaggari.
The Trojans pulled back ahead in the bottom of the sixth, with two errors on the leadoff batter moving the runner to second. Two ground outs would plate the runner and give USC a 3-2 lead. USC added two insurance runs in the eighth inning off a hit batter and a pair of hits.
The Utes out-hit the Trojans, 11-5. Utah left 13 runners on base, leaving two runners stranded in the first, second, sixth, seventh and ninth innings. The Utes put two runners on with no outs in the seventh inning before USC got two strikeouts and a ground out to get out of the inning. Utah made a late rally in the ninth inning with Rose and Carroll both hitting singles with no outs, but three-straight strikeouts ended the late threat.
Utah and USC play game two of the series on Saturday, April 9, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
