LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team dropped the second of a three-game series at USC, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon.
The Utes (10-17, 7-4 Pac-12) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before USC (15-14, 5-3 Pac-12) scored two runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth for the win.
The Utes were led at the plate by Max Schuman, who went 2-for-2.
Utah used four pitchers, with Dalton Carroll going5 1/3 innings in the start, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout. Joshua Tedeschi pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing two hits and two runs. Riley Ottesen pitched a shutout inning with two strikeouts and Nolan Stouder also pitched a shutout inning.
DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. led off the game with a double to left field for the Utes and moved to third on a single from Kellen Marruffo. Keirsey would score on a sacrifice fly from Hunter Simmons.
The Utes left a runner on in the second after Kody Davis hit a double and despite loading the bases in the third inning with one out following two walks and a single from Schuman, USC got a line drive fly out and ground out to get out of the inning. Utah would have just one hit through the remaining six innings.
USC took the lead with a two-run fourth inning which included three hits and an error. The Trojans' four-run sixth inning included a three-run home run.
Utah and USC play game three of the series on Sunday, April 10, at 1:00 p.m. PT.
