HOUSTON - The Utah baseball team split a doubleheader with Houston Baptist on Saturday afternoon, winning game one, 2-0, while falling in game two, 7-3.
In game one, Dalton Carroll pitched 7 1/3 innings to give Utah its first shutout of the season. Carroll allowed six hits and three walks and struck out three in the win. He raises his record to 2-1 on the year. Josh Tedeschi pitched 2/3 of an inning and Riley Ottesen earned his first career save after throwing the ninth inning.
Cody Scaggari led Utah at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that included a triple and double.
Utah stranded two runners on in the second and Scaggari led off the fourth with a triple before the Utes broke the stalemate in the sixth inning. Dallas Carroll beat out an infield single and Scaggari doubled to right field to put both runners in scoring position. AJ Young hit a single to right field to drive in Scaggari, giving Utah a 1-0 lead.
The Utes added an insurance run in the ninth inning. Josh Rose singled with one out and after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and going to third on a wild pitch, Hunter Simmons hit bunt single to score Rose.
Houston Baptist stranded two runners on in the second and fifth innings and the Utes got out of the sixth with a double play after two batters reached with one out. The Huskies also made a late rally in the ninth inning, as a one-out double saw the runner get thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple while a walk and a hit batter put two on before a fly out ended the game.
In game two, Houston Baptist scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-2 tie and go up 5-2. The Huskies added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings. The Utes would make a late rally, scoring a run in the ninth after three hits before HBU got the final two outs to end the game.
Kody Davis, Carroll, Kellen Marruffo, Rose and Max Schuman each had two hits as the Utes out-hit the Huskies, 13-11. Carroll, Rose and Young each drove in runs for the Utes.
Nolan Stouder pitched 4 1/3 innings in the start on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits in the loss with two strikeouts. Hunter Rodriguez pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits while Tanner Thomas allowed one run on two hits after pitching the final two innings.
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double from Rose after Young was hit by a pitch and Marruffo singled. Houston Baptist came right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run on a wild pitch after a leadoff single.
Houston Baptist pulled ahead in the fourth inning with runners reaching on a pair of singles and again a wild pitch gave the Huskies an advantage. The Utes came back in the fifth with three-straight infield singles from Schuman, Davis and Carroll leading to a sacrifice fly from Young, tying the game at 2-2 before the Huskies pulled back ahead with a three-run fifth.
Down 7-2 entering the ninth, pinch-hitter Simmons led off the inning with a single and Schuman followed with a single and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Simmons was thrown out at home on a ground out before Carroll singled in a run to put the score at 7-3 before HBU got the final two outs on a pop up and strike out.
