HOUSTON - The Utah baseball team closed out its four-game series against Houston Baptist with a 4-1 loss to the Huskies on Sunday afternoon.
Houston Baptist took a first-inning lead with a run before the Utes came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth. The Huskies took the lead with a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth inning.
Utah was led at the plate by Kody Davis and Wyler Smith, who each had three hits on the day, while Hunter Simmons went 2-for-4.
Josh Lapiana pitched seven innings, allowing four runs (two unearned) on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Trenton Stoltz pitched one inning, allowing one run with a walk and a strikeout.
The Utes stranded two runners on in the first inning after Davis singled to lead off the game and AJ Young walked. Houston Baptist put up a run in the bottom of the first after two hits.
Utah tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning. Smith and Simmons both singled to put two on and Smith would score after an error on an attempted double play ball.
The Huskies used three hits and an error to put up a run in the fifth to take the lead, adding two insurance runs in the sixth, also on three hits and an error.
Utah returns to the field next weekend at Saint Mary's for a three-game series, March 11-13.
