TEMPE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team scored 10 runs in the final two innings to overtake Arizona State in a 16-7 victory on Saturday afternoon to win its second-straight Pac-12 series.
Although Utah held a 6-2 lead midway through the fifth inning, Arizona State got hot and tied the game at 6-6 through six innings and took a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning. The Utes rallied to score four runs in the eighth to take the lead and added six insurance runs in the ninth en-route to the win.
Utah (8-13) had 23 hits, coming back strong after struggling at the plate in the previous game. Dallas Carroll, DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., AJ Young and Andre Jackson all had three hits with eight total players with two or more hits. Jackson had three RBI to lead the Utes at the plate, with eight different players driving in runs.
Dylan Drachler got the win on the mound, pitching 2 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit with two walks and a strikeout. Josh Lapiana pitched four innings in the start, allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Riley Ottesen surrendered two runs on four hits with a strikeout over 2 1/3 innings pitched.
Arizona State took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A leadoff walk led to an RBI triple and RBI single for the Sun Devils.
Utah came right back in the top of the second with three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead. Cody Scaggari led off the inning with a walk and Keirsey singled to set up an RBI single for Young. Kellen Marruffo had the big hit of the inning, scoring two with an RBI single to right field. Carroll reached on a throwing error on a strange situation where he was originally called out and then called safe after the Sun Devils had already left the field, and Hunter Simmons singled through the right side but Marruffo was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The Utes pulled ahead with a three-run fifth to lead 6-2. Rallying with two outs, Keirsey hit an infield single and Young was intentionally walked. Both runners moved over on a wild pitch setting up a double for Josh Rose, which bounced over the fence and scored two. Kody Davis followed with an RBI single.
ASU came back in the bottom of the fifth, cutting into Utah's lead with three runs to put the score at 6-5. Back-to-back leadoff walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs, leading to a two-RBI single. A double play would get a pair of outs but another RBI single gave ASU an additional run before Young gunned down a runner stealing to end the inning.
The Sun Devils tied the game in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff single and subsequent double, and took the lead in the seventh after a walk led to an RBI double.
Utah scored its four runs in the eighth on four hits, started by a leadoff single from Chandler Anderson. Young, Jackson, and Carroll all had RBI hits in the inning. The Utes had eight hits in the sixth inning, including a two-RBI triple to right field from Jackson and an RBI double from Carroll.
After playing 23 games on the road to start the season, the Utes play their first home game of the season on Tuesday, March 29, against Utah Valley.
