EUGENE, Ore. - Behind strong pitching from Jayson Rose and Dylan Drachler, the Utah baseball team defeated 19th-ranked Oregon, 4-1, on Friday evening to open a three-game series against the Ducks.
Rose pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out nine. He allowed one run on three hits with four walks and raises his record to 2-2 with the win. Dylan Drachler picked up his second save of the season after throwing the final 2 1/3 innings. He didn't allow a hit and struck out four.
Dallas Carroll led Utah at the plate, hitting a triple and driving in a run.
The Utes took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kody Davis led off the game with a double to left field and after moving over on a sacrifice bunt, scored on a ground out.
Oregon tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning. A leadoff walk and one-out single put two on base before the next batter was hit by a pitch to load the bases. A sacrifice fly scored the Ducks first run of the game before Rose got a ground out to get out of the inning.
The Utes got out of a jam in the sixth. A pair of two-out singles and a wild pitch put runners in scoring position for Oregon before Rose got a strikeout to end the inning.
Utah took a 2-1 lead in the seventh. Carroll led off the inning with a triple into the left field corner and scored on a wild pitch. The Utes also had two additional hits from Cody Scaggari and Ellis Kelly in the inning but left both runners on base.
The Utes added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. led off the inning with a single and Davis laid down a bunt and reached on an error on the play. Both runners moved over on a sacrifice bunt and Keirsey scored on a passed ball on a walk.
Utah again took advantage of Oregon miscues to put up another run in the top of the ninth for a 4-1 lead. Chandler Anderson hit an infield bunt single and after stealing second, moved to third on a pickoff attempt and was called safe after the ball was dropped. Anderson would then score on a passed ball on a walk.
The Utes and Ducks continue their series on Saturday, March 19, at 2:00 p.m. PT.
