PROVO, Utah - The Utah baseball team fell to BYU, 6-0, on Tuesday evening in a midweek contest.
BYU scored two runs in the fourth and three runs in the fifth inning en-route to the win.
Utah was led at the plate by Ellis Kelly, who went 3-for-4 on the night. Both BYU and Utah each had 10 hits on the evening. The Utes would strand 11 runners on base throughout the night.
Josh Lapiana pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Josh Tedeschi pitched one inning, allowing three runs on three hits. Riley Ottesen pitched two innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts while Dylan Drachler surrendered one hit and an unearned run with two strikeouts after throwing the eighth inning.
Each team left several runners on in the early innings before BYU broke through in the fourth inning. A leadoff hit batter led to an RBI triple and RBI single to score a pair of runs, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.
BYU took a 5-0 lead after a three-run fifth inning. A pair of one-out doubles led to a run before a two-run home run put two more on the board.
Utah put two runners on with one out in the top of the second after hits from Dallas Carroll and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., before BYU forced a pop up and fly out to get out of the inning. The Utes again put two runners on with no outs after a walk and a single from Kelly. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners over before a fly out and ground out ended the scoring threat.
Utah also stranded two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh after Chandler Anderson laid down a bunt that rolled just beside the third-base line, and Kelly followed with a single, but both runners were again stranded on base after two strikeouts. Utah also left two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings. Cody Scaggari and Hunter Simmons moved into scoring position with one out in the eighth before a fly out and ground out, while in the ninth Kelly and Andre Jackson each had hits with one out, and ground outs would end the contest.
BYU added an unearned run after a throwing error in the eighth inning.
The Utes begin Pac-12 play this weekend with a three-game series against 19th-ranked Oregon beginning Friday, March 18.
