SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team fell to Kansas State, 9-2, in its second game of the Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday night.
Kansas State took a 5-1 lead through four innings with the help of a four-run third. Although the Utes got two runs back in the sixth inning, Kansas State continued to pull away with two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Utah (2-4) was led at the plate by DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., Josh Rose and Cody Scaggari, who each went 2-for-4.
Utah used five pitchers on the mound. In the start, Dalton Carroll pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. He falls to 1-1 with the loss. Nolan Stouder pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit. Josh Lapiana and Andre Jackson and Tanner Thomas also pitched for the Utes.
The Utes looked to get on the board first with two hits in the second inning, but stranded both runners on base.
A three-RBI double with two outs and the bases loaded put Kansas State on the board in the third. An RBI single followed before the Utes caught the runner trying to stretch a single into a double, giving Kansas State a 4-0 lead. The Wildcats added a run in the fourth, loading the bases with one out following a double and two walks, which led to an RBI single before Utah got a double play to get out of the inning.
Utah cut the Kansas State lead to 5-2 with two runs in the sixth inning. Three-straight hits from Keirsey, Kody Davis and Rose to lead off the inning led to a run while a sacrifice fly from Dallas Carroll scored Utah's second run of the game.
Kansas State left the bases loaded in the seventh while the Utes put two runners on in the bottom of the inning, but neither team could plate a run. The Wildcats used a walk, error and wild pitch to score two runs in the eighth and four walks and a single in the ninth led to two more runs.
Scaggari led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, but he would be stranded at third.
In all, the Ute pitchers walked 10 runners on the night.
