SURPRISE, Ariz. - The Utah baseball team fell to Kansas State, 20-4, on Sunday afternoon in the Pac-12/Big 12 Tournament.
Hunter Simmons went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while Cody Scaggari hit a two-run home run for the Utes.
On the mound, Riley Ottesen pitched three innings, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on seven hits with one strikeout. He falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss. Hunter Rodriguez pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Lars Lofgren pitched in the final inning, allowing two runs on three hits.
Kansas State took a 5-0 lead through the first two innings with the help of a four-run second before Utah got on the board with a run in the top of the third. AJ Young led off the inning with a double and scored on a ground out.
The Wildcats continued to increase their lead with a three-run third, added a run in the fourth and scored four in the sixth for a 13-1 lead.
Scaggari hit his home run in the top of the seventh for two runs. The Utes would attempt to keep the rally going as Simmons was hit by a pitch and DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. doubled to left field, but Utah would leave a pair of runners on base.
The Utes added a run in the eighth to put the score at 13-4. Chandler Anderson led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double off the bat of Simmons.
Kansas State added several insurance runs with a seven-run eighth inning.
The Utes struggled with errors, committing five on the day.
Utah returns to the field on Monday, Feb. 29, against Kansas to close out the Pac-12/Big 12 Tournament. The game has been moved to Goodyear Ballpark and will be played at 11:00 a.m.
