SALT LAKE CITY - Utah soccer (5-6-3, 2-3-0) was shutout this afternoon by No. 19 Washington (10-2-1, 3-1-1), 2-0.
Washington took the initiative with the first four shots of the match as Lindsey Luke reacted well to make saves on Amanda Perez and Kelcie Hedge. After Paola van der Veen tested UW goalkeeper Megan Kufeld, the Huskies opened the scoring.
Off a Perez throw-in from the left side of the pitch, Hedge was able to turn and shield off her defender before shooting to the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
After a Natalie Vukic attempt, UW earned a corner in the 28th minute. Havana McElvaine lofted her corner to the far post where McKenzie Karas tapped home for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Utes surged forward and attempted to get on the scoresheet. Right out of the break, Van der Veen had a try blocked away for a corner. The ensuing attempt fell to Katie Rogers who nicked her try over the bar.
In the 52nd minute, Taylor Slattery had a golden opportunity but unfortunately found Kufeld waiting on her try. Utah earned consecutive corners in the 66th minute and on the second attempt, a UW defender blocked Rogers' chance.
A bursting run from the back by Ali Allen almost netted a goal but her attempt from the near side skidded just wide of the far post. Eden Jacobsen also uncorked an attempt that just missed the top of Kufeld's goal in the 78th minute.
Five minutes later, Megan Trabert headed a Van der Veen corner wide and then Kufeld stopped Utah's Dutch freshman in the closing moments of the contest.
Utah hits the road for a contest at Cal one week from today. The Utes and Golden Bears kick-off at 11 a.m. PT next Sunday on the Pac-12 Network.
