PROVO, Utah - BYU got off to a strong start as the Utah baseball team fell 20-3 to the Cougars in Provo on Tuesday evening.
BYU scored six runs in the first inning and 12 runs in the second inning to take an 18-0 lead. The Utes struggled on defense with five errors.
Max Schuman led Utah at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance with an RBI.
Utah used seven pitchers. Hunter Rodriguez (two innings, one run, two strikeouts) and Dustin Hughes (one inning) both made their first career appearances on the mound. Josh Chapman threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and four hits. Tanner Banks (who earned the loss and falls to 1-2 on the year), Luke West and Dylan Drachler also made appearances.
BYU would add solo runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Utah avoided the shutout with a three-run ninth inning. Cory Hunt singled to lead off the ninth and Hunter Simmons reached on an error. A run scored on Konnor Armijo's RBI double, and another run scored on a ground out before an RBI single off the bat of Schuman.
Utah travels to the UT Arlington tournament this weekend for four games against UT Arlington, Abilene Christian and Missouri State, beginning on Friday, March 7.
