LOS ANGELES - Utah soccer suffered a setback on Sunday with a 2-0 loss at No. 23 USC. The Utes now sit at 7-2-3 after playing three-straight Top-25 teams to start league play.
"I was pleased with the way the team played," head coach Rich Manning said. "They came out with the right intentions and wanted to win. "Our players that came off the bench brought energy in the second half to try and even things up. We just couldn't execute some things we wanted to do".
Utah started effectively by creating a pair of early chances through Baylee Nielsen and Katie Taylor. However, both tries went wide and USC capitalized at the other end for a 1-0 lead. Senior Alex Quincey had an attempt blocked before getting on the end of a corner-kick in the 17th minute.
The Utes did not wilt after conceding the opener as Taylor narrowly missed an equalizer. Katie Rigby and Mariah Elmer were the first players to test Caroline Stanley as the goalkeeper made a pair of saves.
Audrey Gibb put one over the bar in the 36th minute before Stanley denied Ali Allen in the 40th. Lindsey Luke, who finished with four saves, made her first stop in the 42nd with a denial of Savannah Levin to keep it a one-goal game.
After the intermission, Utah came out in seek of that elusive first goal. Mariah Elmer had a shot blocked and Sarah Duncan was stopped in the 57th minute by Stanley.
In the 64th minute, Quincey struck again for her second of the game and ninth of the season, giving USC a 2-0 lead.
Utah's two best chances during the remainder of regulation saw Nielsen go wide in the 71st and Mariah Elmer miss high in the 85th. Luke made a pair of saves against the USC counter attack to keep her team within reach.
"There were some positive things from the weekend," Manning added. "There were lessons learned and we can improve on some things. We'll take this week and apply what we learned before we head off to Oregon."
Utah is at Oregon on Friday. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m PT start on the Pac-12 Networks.
