SEATTLE, Wash.- In its first big test of the season, the University of Utah women’s cross country team secured 10th-place with 233 points. Senior Rebekah Winterton led the way for the Utes, finishing 16th overall.
“It is disappointing, but not devastating day,” Utah head coach Kyle Kepler said. “Our top runner, freshman Sarah Feeny, was feeling ill today and it obviously affected her. When your top runner isn’t feeling well and doesn’t run well you drop a little farther back in the pack then you would have expected to. Getting her healthy and running the way we know she is capable will definitely help us get us back in the mix. Right now we have to lick our wounds a little bit and go home and clean up a few things. It is not going to get any easier as we prepare for pre-nationals in two weeks. It is going to be a big challenge with a lot more teams and it gives us an opportunity to hopefully redeem ourselves. We know we are on the verge and we are not as far away as today made it seem.”
In her first six-kilometer race of the year, Winterton was able to recover from a slow start and record a time of 20:53 to earn 16th overall.
“Rebekah ran well,” Kepler said. “She continues to come along and work herself back into the form she was a year ago. As a team, we need to work on starting the race better. We put ourselves in a hole in the first of three laps of the race and some of our runners never really recovered. We have to be more aggressive up front and we will address that this week in practice.”
Finishing second for the Utes and 44th overall was true freshman Shaylen Crook, who arguably ran the best of race of her collegiate career, recording a time of 21:18.
Redshirt freshman Hannah McInturff crossed the line third for the Utes in a time of 21:27. Running in her first-ever 6,000-meter race, McInturff handled the increased distance well finishing 52nd overall. Jessica Sams was not far behind, finishing fourth on the team and 61st overall with a time of 21:33.
Nicole Rietz rounded out the top-five finishers for the Utes, finishing 77th overall clocking a time of 21:45.
The Utes finished the race with 233 points, securing 10th place. The overall winner of the meet was Oregon with 48 points. Rounding out the top-five team scores were: Stanford (55 points), Washington (119 points), UCLA (134 points), and Portland (144 points).
The Utah cross country team continues its season on Oct. 18 at the Indiana State Pre Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind.
