RENO, Nev. – The No. 9-ranked Utah cross country team finished fourth as a team at the 2024 NCAA Mountain Regionals behind a trio of top-25 finishers in
Erin Vringer,
Anna Peters and
Morgan Jensen on a snowy Friday at Washoe Golf Course.
Utes sat in seventh as teams passed the under-kilometer marker after a tight mad dash from the start with their usual suspects up front.
Heading in the 2.2km mark, Utah moved up one spot as a team into sixth led by
McKaylie Caesar – who moved up six spots to 26th.
Anna Peters found some room out of the opening pack and jumped 12 spots to No. 36 with
Morgan Jensen and
Erin Vringer right behind at 39th and 40th, respectively, while
Lindsey Peters checked in at 46th at that point in the race.
The Women of Utah closed their grouping just past the halfway point (3.8km), moving into fourth as a team behind A. Peters pushing up 18 spots to 19th with Caesar right behind her in 21st. Vringer and Jensen also made pushes of their own, moving up 15 and 14 spots, respectively, to make the grouping between the top-four just eight runners.
Peters (13th) and Vringer (15th) continued to move up by the time teams crossed the 4.7km mark as the Utes remained at No. 4 as a team.
Vringer would narrowly edge out A. Peters at the finish line to claim 12th with a run of 20:11.9 while A. Peters recorded a time of 20:12.1 for 13th-overall. Jensen, a Utah product out of Alta HS, passed seven runners down the final kilometer to claim 21st-overall with a mark of 20:15.9.
Caesar was the fourth Ute to cross, placing 27th (20:27.6) while L. Peters (21:00.5) came in 49th as the fifth and final scorer for Utah.
Emily Chaston just missed out as a scorer for Utah, posting a time of 21:03.4 to finish right behind L. Peters at 21:03.4. Freshman
Marika Couture rounded out the group of runners for the Women of Utah with a run of 21:27.2.
With their top-25 finish, Vringer, A. Peters and Jensen all earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors – which will be officially announced next Monday. This is the first all-region accolade for Vringer while A. Peters and Jensen earned their second-straight all-region award – becoming the first pair to do it since Grayson Murphy and Poppy Tank did it in 2016 and 2017.
