TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- The University of Utah women's cross country team wrapped up the Indiana State Pre National Invitational in 13th place overall, led by the performance of true freshman Sarah Feeny.
"We had a pretty solid day all around," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "All of our kids, for the most part, ran solid races. The key to us performing as well as we did was the fact that we started out much better this week. In a race with nearly 300 runners you have to get closer to the front then we have in previous weeks. We finished 13th overall, which is kind of in the middle of where I expected us to be. We could have been in the top 10 if we would have ran perfectly today, but I am still happy with the result."
The Utes began the day with seven runners competing in the six-kilometer blue race. Leading the way for this group was Sarah Feeny, clocking a time of 21:46.3 to earn 68th overall. Rebekah Winterton was the second Ute to cross the finish line, posting a time of 21:49.9 for 77th place.
Securing the third spot for Utah was redshirt freshman Hannah McInturff. McInturff crossed the line in 108th-place after recording a time of 22:09.2. Shaylen Crook and Jessican Sams rounded out the top-five finishers for the Utes claiming 118th and 118th respectively for the Utes.
Senior Nikki Rietz placed 177th followed by fellow senior Lauren Mills in 254th.
In the open race, the Utes had two runners finish in the top 25. Dakota Grossman finished first for the Utes and 23rd overall with a time of 23:17.1. Junior Andrea Chavez finished not far behind in 25th with a time of 23:19.2.
Overall, the Utes finished 13th with a combined team score of 508 points. Georgetown University won the meet with 110 points followed by Oregon in second place and Michigan in third.
The Utes return to action on Oct. 31 at the Pac-12 Championships in Oakland, Calif.
