This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (2-4-1) hosts a pair of matches at Ute Field this weekend, beginning Friday against Weber State (1-5-0) at 7:30 p.m. MT. The Utes will also face Idaho State (3-4-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Freshmen Lift Ute Offense at Saint Mary's Classic...
The Utes came away from the Saint Mary's Classic with a 1-1 record for the weekend after beating UC Riverside, 2-1, then falling to host Saint Mary's by the same score. All three of the Ute goals were scored by true freshmen, as midfielder McKel Wall netted a pair of goals, including Friday's game-winner, and forward Jill Robison accounted for the other. Wall and Robison each scored their first career goals in Friday's victory.
Wall also tallied the Utes' only goal against Saint Mary's, adding to her list of notables from the weekend. Wall became the first Ute freshman to score in back-to-back games since Hanna Terry on Oct. 10 and Oct. 15, 2009. She is also the first freshman to score a game-winning goal since Oct. 16, 2008 and the first to have her initial collegiate goal be a game winner since Sept. 19, 2008. Both of those were previously accomplished by now-senior captain Lauren Porter.
Additionally, one of the Utes' two assists from the weekend also came from a freshman as Sarah Duncan got her first career helper. Incidentally, the other assist was also from an underclassmen, redshirt sophomore Allie Wisner.
Three Utes Named to SMC Classic All-Tournament Team...
Utah had three players named to the Saint Mary's Classic All-Tournament Team. Leading the Utes was Wall, who tied for leading scorer honors at the tournament with two goals, finished tied for second among all players with four points, and was one of four different players to net a game winner in the event. Joining her was Robison, who scored once, and senior defender Lauren Dudley, who anchored the Ute defense and also got into the act on offense with two shots on goal.
Local Impact...
Six of the Utes' starting 11 in each game last weekend hailed from the state of Utah. Wall and Robison, Utah's goal scorers on the weekend, are natives of the Beehive State, while Duncan, who assisted on Robison's goal, is an in-state player as well.
The Utes carry 14 players from Utah on the roster and have seen 11 of them crack the starting lineup this year.
Manning to Coach 200th Career Game This Weekend...
Sunday's match against Idaho State will mark Rich Manning's 200th career game as the head coach of the Utes. Now in his 10th season, Manning is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Pac-12, trailing Washington's Leslie Gallimore (18th season) and Colorado's Bill Hempen (11th season). He enters the weekend with a career record of 112-66-20 (.617).
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
Weber State Wildcats
Weber State comes to Ute Field looking to snap a four-match losing streak. The Wildcats have been shut out in four of their five losses this season but have played very stingy defense as well, with all four of those games ending in 1-0 fashion.
Weber State has mustered just two goals this year with Jessie Baddley and Kierstin Raught each finding the back of the net. Baddley accounted for the game-winner in the Wildcats' only victory, a 1-0 shutout at Utah Valley, and also has an assist this season.
Defensively, Kirsten Anderson and Ryann Waldman have split time in the net this year. Anderson has allowed just two goals and made 14 saves, while Waldman has conceded five goals and made 11 stops.
The Wildcats are coached by Tim Crompton, who owns a 57-72-13 record, now in his eighth season at the helm. Mike Manning, brother of Utah head coach Rich Manning, also serves as the team's Volunteer Assistant Coach.
Idaho State Bengals
After beginning the year with three consecutive victories, Idaho State carries a four-match losing streak into this week. Prior to their trip to Salt Lake City, the Bengals will host New Mexico State on Friday.
Amanda Ellsworth is leading the ISU attack with four goals, while seven other players have scored one goal apiece. Rachel Strawn leads the team with two assists, while three others have one each.
Defensively, Carly Hutchings-Maloney has played the majority of time in net, allowing 14 goals while making 21 saves and recording one shutout. Maria Dela Cruz has made brief appearances in three games, making two saves and allowing three goals.
Idaho State is coached by Allison Gibson, who owns a 39-49-13 record, now in her sixth season.
The All-Time Series...
Utah holds an all-time record of 7-3 against Weber State, including a 3-2 record at Ute Field. The two teams have split their last two meetings on each other's home turf, with the Wildcats capturing a 1-0 victory in Salt Lake City in 2009 and Utah winning a 3-2 shootout last year in Ogden.
The Utes have never lost to Idaho State and hold a 6-0-2 all-time mark against the Bengals, including a 4-0-1 record at home. Almost all of their matches have been high-scoring affairs, as only two of their eight meetings have seen both squads combine for less than four goals. Their last two meetings have both resulted in 3-2 overtime victories for Utah, one in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament and the other during the 2007 regular season, both at Ute Field.
