Live Scoring, Audio and Video at Washington
This Week's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (7-4-1, 3-0-0 Pac-12) puts its unbeaten Pac-12 record on the line this week with a pair of road games in the state of Washington. First up is a Friday afternoon match at Washington State (8-4-1, 2-1-0 Pac-12), kicking off at 4 p.m. MT, followed by a Sunday tilt at Washington (4-5-3, 0-2-1 Pac-12). Kickoff in Seattle is slated for 1 p.m. MT.
Utes Riding Five-Match Win Streak, Their Best Run of Results Since 2007...
Utah has won five consecutive matches for the first and seven of its last eight contests. During that stretch, the Utes have gone 5-0 at home, 1-1 on the road and 1-0 in neutral-site matches. This streak marks the first time since 2006 that Utah has won five straight games. During the 2007 season, the Utes experienced a 13-match unbeaten streak but never won five straight, as that run also included four draws.
Utah is One of the Three Remaining Unbeatens in Pac-12...
Through the first two weekends of conference play, Utah is one of three remaining team with an unbeaten record in Pac-12 games. The Utes join two of the top teams in the nation, No. 1-ranked Stanford and No. 3-ranked UCLA, with 3-0-0 Pac-12 records. Stanford and UCLA are unbeaten on the season at 11-0-1 and 10-0-1, respectively.
Dalley Leading the Pac-12 Scoring Stats...
Through three Pac-12 games, senior forward Erin Dalley leads the conference, or is tied for the top spot, in seven statistical categories. She is ranked No. 1 in points (6) and points per game (2.00) and is tied at No. 1 in goals (2), goals per game (0.67), assists (2), assists per game (0.67) and game-winning goals (1). She also ranks No. 3 in total shots (10) and shots per game (3.33). Additionall, freshman midfielder Avery Ford joins Dalley as she is tied for No. 1 in assists (2) and assists per game (0.67). **For complete statistical rankings, including all games and Pac-12 games only, see page 7.
Senior Forward Goes Back-to-Back...
Dalley scored in back-to-back games over the weekend, with each goal playing an integral role in Utah's two victories. Friday night she netted the game-tying goal to initiate the Utes' comeback win after going down 1-0 against Arizona State. On Sunday, she broke a 1-1 deadlock against Arizona with the eventual game-winning goal, then followed with an assist as Utah tallied an insurance goal in the 3-1 victory.
Dalley became the fourth Ute this year to score in back-to-back games. Sophomore midfielders Harley Spier and Leslie Muirhead each did so against Idaho State (Sept. 18) and at Oregon (Sept. 30) while freshman midfielder McKel Wall achieved the feat at the Saint Mary's Classic against UC Riverside and Saint Mary's.
Interestingly, all four times that a Ute has scored in back-to-back games this season, at least one of their goals was a game winner.
Scouting this Weekend's Opposition...
Washington State Cougars
Washington State is fresh off a 2-0 upset victory at home over No. 21-California, a great bounce-back after a difficult 1-0 home loss to No. 1 Stanford on an 86th-minute goal. The Cougars other Pac-12 win came on the road at USC by a 2-1 score.
WSU is led offensively by Eileen Maes and Brandi Vega. Maes has scored a team-leading four goals, while Vega has netted three goals and tallied a team-high five assists. Micaela Castain has also scored three goals. Each of the three players have accounted for two game-winning goals.
In net for the Cougars, Gurveen Clair has conceeded only nine goals on the season while making 54 saves and posting three shutouts. She owns a save percentage of .857 to go with a 0.72 goals-against-average.
Washington State is coached by Matt Potter, who holds an 84-66-23 record and is in his ninth season guiding the Cougars.
Washington Huskies
Washington is coming off a tough 1-0 overtime loss at home to No. 1 Stanford, which followed a 1-1 draw with No. 21 California. The Huskies' other Pac-12 loss came at UCLA, 1-0.
The Washington attack is led by Sarah Martinez, Hillary Aevenbergen and Lindsay Elston, who own three goals apiece. Martinez also has two assists to total a team-high eight points. Chelsea Archer has scored twice as well, while six other Huskies have also found the back of the net.
Defensively, goalkeeper Jorde Lafontain-Kussman holds a 3-4-2 record, allowing 12 goals and making 52 saves. Her save percentage stands at .812 and she owns a 0.92 GAA. Kari Davidson also started two games in goal for the Huskies, going 1-1 while allowing four goals and making six saves. The Huskies have yet to record a shutout, conceding at least one goal in each of their 11 games this year.
Washington is coached by Lesle Gallimore, now in her 18th season. Gallimore holds a 186-147-29 record at the helm for the Huskies.
The All-Time Series...
Utah is 4-2-1 all-time against Washington State, including a 1-1-1 record on the Cougars' home field. The two teams last faced off in 2010 at the Cougar Classic, where WSU took a 1-0 win in Pullman. Utah's last victory against Washington State was a 2-1 overtime win in Salt Lake City in 2006.
The Utes are 3-1 all-time against Washington, with a 1-1 record on the Huskies' home pitch. Utah's only loss in the series came in 2008 as they dropped a 3-0 loss to the No. 21-ranked Huskies in Seattle. Utah's last win in the series was a 3-2 victory in at Ute Field in 2007.
Utes Find Scoring Form After Slow Start...
After failing to score in the first four games of the season and starting 0-3-1, Utah has found its scoring legs and is averaging 2.13 goals per game during its run of seven wins from its last eight matches.
Though three Pac-12 matches, Utah is second only to Stanford statistically in points (21), goals (7) and assists (7). Stanford leads the Pac-12 with 28 points on nine goals and 10 assists.
Senior Captain Returns from Injury...
Senior defender Lauren Porter, the team captain, made her return to the field on Sept. 30 in the win against Arizona State. She had missed eight games with a knee injury suffered at BYU in the second game of the season. Porter then took her rightful place in the Utah starting lineup at center back Sunday against Arizona, where she has started all four years of her career, and played all 90 minutes in the 3-1 win.
Utes Win Inaugural Pac-12 Game, then Make it Three Straight...
With the 2-0 win at Oregon on Sept. 23, Utah set several milestones regarding its membership in the Pac-12. The Utes earned their first overall victory, first road win, first shutout and scored their first goals as members of the new 12-team conference. The Utes then made it three straight with the 2-1 victory over ASU on Friday and 3-1 win against Arizona on Sunday.
Debut Goal-Scorers Filling Up Stat Sheet...
Ten different Utes have hit the back of the net this year, including seven players who have scored their first career goals. Most recently it was redshirt sophomore Stephanie Lemeza who scored the first of her career as she tallied the third goal against Arizona on Sunday.
Six Different Utes Have Tallied Game Winners...
Six different Utes have netted the game-winning goal in Utah's six victories this year. Three of those game winners also accounted for the first career goal for those players, including Muirhead (vs. ISU), Ford (vs. Weber State) and Wall (vs. UC Riverside). The other winners came from Dalley (vs. Utah Valley and vs. Arizona), Spier (at Oregon) and Dudley (vs. Arizona State).
With the strikes from Ford and Wall, Utah has had two or more freshman secure game-winning goals in the same season for the first time since Adele Letro and Katy Reineke did so in 2005. Letro finished that season with a team-high seven goals, including three game winners.
Freshmen Account for More Than One Third of Utah's Points...
Six of the seven Utah freshmen who have seen the field this year have tallied points and all seven have cracked the starting lineup at least once. Forward Jill Robison, Ford and Wall have all scored goals, while forward Katie Taylor, Robison, midfielder Ashton Hall and defender Sarah Duncan have all logged assists. In total, freshmen have racked up four goals and 10 assists for 18 of Utah's 49 total points.
Turpen Posts Utah's First-Ever Pac-12 Shutout at Oregon...
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen got the win in Utah's 2-0 shutout of Oregon on Sept. 23, her second shutout of the year. Even more distinctly, she became the first Utah goalkeeper to ever make a save, get a win and earn a shutout in the Pac-12 era.
With her two victories last weekend, Turpen improved to 7-4-0 on the season and ran her save total to 39. Her save percentage now stands at to .765 and she has lowered her goals-against-average to 1.12 for the season.
Sophomore Cheyanne Mulcock has also appeared in three games and has yet to concede a goal while making seven saves. She has combined with Turpen to register a pair of team shutouts, including a 0-0 double-overtime draw on the road in the Utes' season opener at Cal State Fullerton, where she was the goalkeeper of record.
Weekend Recap - Utah Sweeps Arizona Schools...
Utah won a pair of home games against the Arizona schools last weekend, defeating Arizona State, 2-1, and Arizona, 3-1. Utah succesfully came back from a 1-0 deficit in the second half against the Sun Devils. In the win over the Wildcats, the Utes jumped out to a first-half lead but surrendered it before the break, then re-captured the advantage permanently in the second half.
Manning Victorious in 200th Game...
Utah's 3-1 win against Idaho State on Sept. 18 marked Rich Manning's 200th career game as the head coach of the Utes. Now in his 10th season guiding the squad, Manning is the third-longest tenured head coach in the Pac-12, trailing Washington's Leslie Gallimore (18th season) and Colorado's Bill Hempen (11th season). Manning carries a career record of 115-66-20 (.622) as he guides the Utes through their first season in the Pac-12.
Local Impact...
At least six of the Utes' starting 11 in each of the last seven games have hailed from the state of Utah. Of Utah's 14 goals during that span, 11 of them have been registered by natives of the Beehive State. The Utes carry 14 players from Utah on the roster and have seen 11 of them crack the starting lineup this year.
Three Utes Named to SMC Classic All-Tournament Team... Utah had three players named to the Saint Mary's Classic All-Tournament Team as Dudley, Wall and freshman forward Jill Robison each recieved the honor.
Preseason Prognostication...
Stanford was the clear preseason favorite in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll, leading the voting with 121 points and receiving all 11 first-place votes. The rest of the field, in order: 2. UCLA (102); 3. Oregon State (96); 4. USC (86); 5. Washington (82); 6. California (78); 7. Arizona State (60); t8. Oregon (49); t8. Washington State (49); 10. Colorado (35); 11. Utah (18); 12.
