SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of Utah women's soccer team (1-9) lost a 1-0 decision at No. 11 Santa Clara (6-1-2) Sunday in the final game of the Santa Clara Classic. Junior defender Lauren Porter was named to the All-Tournament team after netting a goal against Stanford in the opening game of the tournament on Friday.
After battling through a scoreless first half, Santa Clara took a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the second half as Bridget Miller scored her first of the season. Amanda Poach and Meleana Shim were credited with assists on the play.
Junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen put forth another solid effort in net, making six stops for the Utes to increase her Mountain West Conference-leading save total to 52. She is averaging 5.2 saves per game.
Utah has faced three Top 25 teams this year, defending well and coming up just shy in two of those contests, losing by the narrowest of margins. The Utes also lost to No. 21 Washington State, 1-0.
Santa Clara outshot Utah 16-6, with shots on goal going 7-4 for the Broncos. Corner kicks were 9-1 against the Utes, while fouls were 10-5 in SCU's favor. The Utes were held scoreless for the seventh time this year and dropped their fourth game by a one-goal margin.
Utah returns home to take on Utah State Thursday night at Ute Field as the team celebrates Utah Youth Soccer night. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. MT.
