Utes Close Out USC Series With 11-6 Loss

LOS ANGELES - The Utah baseball team closes out its three-game series against USC with an 11-6 loss on Sunday afternoon.
Gavin Green and Nik Gumeson led the Utes with three hits each.
Utah held an early 4-2 lead through the top of the third inning. Green started the game off right for the Utes with a triple to right center. He scored on a throwing error by the second baseman, giving Utah a 1-0 lead. Although the Utes would load the bases with no one out, the Trojans got out of the inning with two strikeouts and a ground out. USC put up a run of its own in the bottom of the first before Utah took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Nick Kuroczko and C.J. Cron each had RBI singles in the inning after Green's two-out single to center.
USC scored a run in the bottom of the second on three hits while Utah came back with a run in the top of the third as Green scored Cooper Blanc with a single.
The Trojans pulled ahead with a four-run third inning, 6-4. Kevin Roundtree's bases-loaded single scored two runs for USC in the inning.
The Utes cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth inning on Jo Jo Sharrar's two-out single, scoring Cron.
USC increased its lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh and added some late insurance runs with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Utah also scored a run in the eighth after Kuroczko led off the inning with a single.
Utah stranded 13 runners on base throughout the contest and out-hit the Trojans, 14-13. Kuroczko, Cron and Sharrar each had two hits for Utah.
Bryn Card falls to 2-4 on the mound, allowing six hits and five earned runs. Zach Adams pitched strong in relief, allowing just one run on four hits in 4.1 innings. Tyler Wagner and Tyler Andersen both pitched in the final inning.
Utah continues on the road next weekend, returning to conference play at UNLV. Action begins with a 7:00 p.m. PT game on Friday, May 14.
