Utes Drop Two Games at Oregon State Spring Tournament

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Utah baseball team dropped a pair of games at the Oregon State spring tournament on Saturday, falling to Portland 4-1 before No. 12 Oregon State rallied in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Utes in the afternoon game, 5-4.
Utah's Jordan Whatcott and Portland's Zach Varce spent most of game one locked in a pitchers duel. The Utes got on the board in the top of the third inning after Gavin Green led off with a double before scoring on Michael Beltran's sacrifice fly. The Pilots answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs, as Tyler Thompson and Craig Smith each singled and scored.
Whatcott went seven innings, striking out three and falling to 1-3 on the year. Brock Duke pitched the final inning, allowing two runs (one earned).
Devin Walker led the Utes at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance.
With the score tied at 1-1 against Oregon State, Utah exploded in the seventh inning for three runs. Jo Jo Sharrar, Cooper Blanc each singled while Yagi drove in Sharrar with a single to put the Utes ahead. Nick Kuroczko's single through the left side scored two more runs in the inning.
The Beavers cut the lead to 4-2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh before Matt Boyd's two-out bases-loaded double in the bottom of the ninth sent three runs across the plate and gave OSU the 5-4 win.
Sharrar had two hits for Utah. Zach Adams earned the loss on the mound for Utah after pitching 1.2 innings. Ute starter Bryn Card went 6.1 innings with three strikeouts and two earned runs.
Utah plays the final game of the tournament on Sunday, March 14, against Portland at 11:00 a.m. PT.
