SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (3-11-1, 1-0-1 MWC) played to a 1-1 draw with Wyoming (6-7-1, 0-1-1 MWC) Friday at Ute Field. The two teams scored within 45 seconds of each other in the first half, then went scoreless through the rest of regulation and two overtime periods.
"Overall I was really pleased with our effort, it was a hard fought battle until the last minute," said Utah head coach Rich Manning. "We're a little disappointed not to have gotten the win, we played a terrific first half, but Wyoming showed a lot of spirit through that second half."
Utah opened the scoring at the 10:17 mark as freshman forward Lexi Krantz finished off a corner kick from senior midfielder Morgan Skeen, tallying her first collegiate goal. Skeen now leads the team with a career-high three assists on the year.
Wyoming tied the game just 44 seconds later as Jerrica DiVincenzo picked off a Utah clearance and lofted a well-placed shot over the head of Utah goalkeeper Hannah Turpen from 20 yards out, evening the game at 1-1.
Each team had several scoring opportunities throughout the second half and overtime, but each goalkeeper was up to the task. Turpen's effort was highlighted by a wonderful leaping save to her right to stifle a Cowgirl opportunity. Wyoming's Courtney Merkle stopped a point-blank shot from Krantz, getting her fingertips on it and deflecting it onto the crossbar. Turpen finished the game with six saves while Merkle made 10.
Utah outshot Wyoming 25-21 overall, with shots on goal going 11-7 for the Utes. Utah earned 10 corners to the Cowgirls' four, while fouls were whistled 14-9 against the Utes.
Utah is back in action Thursday, Oct. 14, as the Utes travel to Alburquerque to take on New Mexico at 6 p.m. MT. They then continue on to Fort Worth, Texas, to play TCU on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 9 a.m. MT.
Additional Quotes
Head Coach Rich Manning
On how the team benefitted from a full week of practice leading to the game:
"I thought we moved the ball fantastically tonight. We had really good rhythm, we spread it out and we gave ourselves a lot of chances to score. To get a goal off a corner kick was great too, we have been working on set pieces in practice. We have also been focusing on our midfielders getting the ball and controlling play, and I thought we were good in that area as well."
On having another full week of practice before the upcoming road weekend:
"It's more of the same for us, really. We have a lot of new players who are still working into the game and we are getting some players back from injury, and they all need reps. We are going to keep it simple and concentrate on the four or five things that we feel can help us be successful."
On the return of Katie Martinez (redshirted last year due to knee injury):
"I was really pleased to see Katie Martinez playing for us for the first time in a year and a half. She got about 15 minutes on the field and it was just great to see her back out there tonight."
Freshman forward Lexi Krantz
On scoring her first collegiate goal:
"It was awesome. I got a great cross from Morgan and I was just glad to finish it. We have been working a lot on corners so it was good to score off one."
Overall thoughts on the game:
"Both teams fought really hard. They got a good goal right after we scored ours, we have to get better at focusing after a goal. But it was played with a lot of intensity and it was a good game."
Freshman defender Jenny Hutton
Thoughts on the game:
"Overall I thought we were probably the better team for most of the game. We had more shots on goal, got a lot of crosses in and got to the end line well, we just had trouble finishing."
On getting more involved in the offense:
"The coaches have been stressing in practice to get wider and push forward, and it showed in the game. We have been working hard in practice on our backs winning the ball and getting forward in attack."
On her health and fitness level after returning from a knee injury:
"It took a couple of games to get the feel of the team because I missed all of preseason. But I finally feel good, it's really good to be back."
