ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. - The University of Utah women's soccer team (3-12-1, 1-1-1 MWC) fell at New Mexico (9-1-3, 3-0-0 MWC) Thursday night by a 3-0 score. After a scoreless first half, the Lobos tucked away all three of their goals in the second frame.
New Mexico opened the scoring in the 64th minute as Amanda Collins finished off a corner kick that the Utes couldn't clear away. After being served in by Jael Fanning, Utah's clearance remained in the box and Collins struck a solid one-timer right under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead and the eventual match winner.
Just under two minutes later, Utah had its best opportunity to pull the game level when a 30-yard free kick from junior defender Lauren Dudley forced New Mexico goalkeeper Kelli Cornell to make a great diving save.
The Lobos made it 2-0 with a counter-attacking goal as the Utes began to push players forward in an attempt to get the equalizer. Jennifer Williams received a pass down the right side, carried it into the box and toe-poked it across the face of goal, where Natalie Jenks ran onto it for the easy put-away. It became 3-0 when Williams, utilizing a nice piece of skill, flicked a bouncing ball over the head of herself and her defender, then ran onto it and struck gold with the ensuing shot.
Total shots were even for the game at 13-13 overall, with shots on goal going 10-5 against the Utes. Corner kicks were 4-0 in the Lobos' favor, while fouls were whistled 10-7 against New Mexico.
The loss was the first in conference play for the Utes, while the Lobos remained perfect, securing nine out of nine possible points through three games in the title race.
Utah will stay on the road and head to Fort Worth, Texas, where the Utes will face TCU on Saturday at 9 a.m. MT.
