The All-Time Series...
Utah is 17-1-0 all-time against Wyoming, including a perfect 7-0 record at home against the Cowgirls. Utah's only loss to Wyoming came in the final game of the regular season in 2007, a 4-1 defeat in Laramie. The Utes bounced back just four days later, shutting out the Cowgirls in the first round of the MWC Tournament, 2-0. Utah has won two straight meetings since then, capturing a 2-1 victory last year in Laramie and a 1-0 win in Salt Lake City in 2008.
Scouting This Weekend's Opposition...
Wyoming Cowgirls
Wyoming enters this weekend following two straight losses. In their last outing, the Cowgirls dropped their conference opener at home against BYU, 4-1, after falling at home to New Mexico State, 2-1.
Wyoming is led offensively by Nahiomy Ortiz, who has racked up 10 points on three goals and four assists. Carmen Blume and Jenny Johnson have each tallied three goals as well, while Liz O'Reilly leads the squad with six assists.
Defensively, Courtney Merkle has started 11 of Wyoming's 13 games, making 50 saves and allowing 17 goals, for a goals-against-average of 1.62. She has logged three shutouts on the year. Meagan Burke has also appeared in four games, starting two, making 10 saves and allowing four goals. She owns a GAA of 1.60 and has one shutout on the year.
The Cowgirls are coached by Danny Sanchez, who owns a 23-25-4 record, now in his third season at the Wyoming helm.
Turpen Named MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Week...
Coming off her first shutout of 2010 in Utah's conference opener at Air Force, junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen has been named the MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with San Diego State's senior goalkeeper Aubree Southwick.
The award marks Turpen's second career MWC Defensive Player of the Week award. She first earned the honor on Oct. 12, 2009 after recording a shutout on the road at UNLV and helping Utah to a 1-1 double-overtime draw at San Diego State.
Turpen made six saves at Air Force to give Utah a 1-0 win, giving Utah its first clean sheet of the 2010 season. She followed that effort with two saves in a first-half shutout against Oregon State before coming out of the game at halftime.
Despite missing two games last week with an injury, Turpen is still ranked No. 2 in the MWC in total saves (60) and saves per game (5.00).
Turpen is on pace to eclipse 90 saves for the season, which would give her the fourth-highest single-season save total in 16 years of Utah Soccer. She is chasing the mark of 89 stops, set by Tawni Martineau in back-to-back seasons (1997-98).
Hair Looks to Carry Momentum of Two Solid Performances...
Senior forward Lauren Hair is coming off two of her most dangerous games all season. Friday night at Air Force, she gave Utah a win in its conference opener for the first time since 2006, scoring the game's only goal. She led all players with six shots, putting four on goal.
Sunday against Oregon State, she led the Utes with four shots as she caused a game-long headache for the Beaver defense.
In total, Hair took 10 shots on the weekend, putting five on goal. She was also responsible for drawing at least five of Utah's 11 corner kicks over the two games, including all three at Air Force.
Last Time Out...
Utah is coming off a split weekend as the Utes captured their conference opener at Air Force Friday, 1-0, then fell at home Sunday in a non-conference contest to Oregon State, 1-0.
