This Weekend's Action...
The University of Utah women's soccer team (4-12-1, 2-1-1 MWC) hosts a pair of Mountain West Conference matches this week that could have a big impact on the final regular-season standings. With just three games remaining before the conference tournament, all three at home, the Utes have a good opportunity to drive toward the top of the league table. Utah will host San Diego State (5-8-3, 3-1-0 MWC) Thursday at 7 p.m. MT, then takes on UNLV (10-5-0, 2-2-0 MWC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The All-Time Series...
Utah is 11-4-3 all-time against San Diego State, including a 4-2-1 mark at home. The two teams clashed twice last year, with both games going into double-overtime and just one goal separating the two squads. The Aztecs netted a golden goal in the second extra frame of an MWC Tournament semifinal matchup in Provo, Utah, to win 2-1. The regular-season meeting in San Diego resulted in a 1-1 draw. The last time Utah and SDSU met in Salt Lake City, the Utes captured a 4-1 victory in 2008.
The Utes hold a 10-3-3 all-time record against UNLV, which inclues a 6-1-2 mark at Ute Field. Utah has won two straight against the Rebels, including a 1-0 shutout victory in Las Vegas last year and a 3-1 win at home in 2008. The Utes have not lost a regular-season meeting to UNLV since 2004, going 3-0-2 in that span. Their last loss to the Rebels was a 2-1 result in the 2007 MWC Tournament semifinals.
Three Captains Combine for Incredible Late-Game Heroics...
In Saturday's 3-2 overtime victory on the road at TCU, senior captain Lauren Hair and junior captains Erin Dalley and Lauren Dudley all combined to come up with a game-tying goal in the last minute of regulation and then the game-winning tally in overtime.
Trailing 2-1 with 18 seconds left on the clock, Dudley drilled a free kick from Utah's half of the field all the way to the TCU penalty box, where Dalley rose up and struck a perfect header into the back of the net. Tied 2-2 and just over two minutes into the overtime period, Hair beat her defender and put in a perfect cross that found Dalley and she one-timed it for the game-winner. Hair had also scored Utah's first goal of the game, just 50 seconds into the contest.
MWC Title Race is Heating Up...
New Mexico is the lone unbeaten squad in the MWC, going 4-0 to earn 12 points in the conference title race. BYU and San Diego State, each with 3-1 records, trail the Lobos with nine points apiece, while Utah is holding in fourth with seven points from a 2-1-1 record. UNLV sits in fifth place with six points, while TCU (3), Wyoming (1) and Air Force (0) round out the bottom three. The top six teams advance to the MWC Tournament in San Diego, Calif., Nov. 3-6.
Turpen Reclaims MWC Lead in Saves...
With three games remaining in the regular season, Utah junior goalkeeper Hannah Turpen leads the league in total saves (79) and saves per game (5.27).
The first MWC Defensive Player of the Week during conference play, Turpen recorded her first shutout of the year in the league-opener at Air Force.
Turpen is on pace to eclipse 90 saves for the season, which would give her the fourth-highest single-season save total in 16 years of Utah Soccer. She is chasing the mark of 89 stops, set by Tawni Martineau in back-to-back seasons (1997-98).
